Off the top of my head: Code Name Verity, Scarlet Pimpernel, The Perilous Gard?
I was going to say ‘swashbuckling edition! :D’ but … Scarlet Pimpernel is literally the only one of these that’s a swashbuckler, I briefly confused Perilous Gard with Sherwood Ring. It’s a thing that could happen to anyone.
A thing that could not happen to anyone: MAKING THIS DECISION WHICH IS ACTUALLY REALLY HARD. I mean, I could actually burn the Scarlet Pimpernel and survive it fine, but so many things I love deeply could not have come to be without the Scarlet Pimpernel leading the way. Let’s rewrite the Scarlet Pimpernel and make it the book I have always wanted it to be from the beginning: more cynical, and involving lesbians. (attn: innerbrat! PAGING INNERBRAT.)
So it is down to you, Perilous Gard and Code Name Verity, and it is down to me. This … maybe the most difficult decision I’ve made. Code Name Verity is probably a more important book than Perilous Gard, is the thing, as well as being brilliant; I legit think Julie is kind of groundbreaking as a character, and the focus on Julie and Maddie’s friendship is so important, and THAT’S WHY I’LL CRY BITTER TEARS OF GUILT AS I SET IT ON FIRE AND RUN AWAY CLUTCHING PERILOUS GARD TO MY HEART.
