Because it’s the thing she needs to lie about most and because it’s a dream of merry old England - a mysterious spy master, a wee pub, a bike through the countryside, a woman who can stand her liquor
my guess as to what *most likely* happened is that she was recruited straight out of Oxford for her knowledge of German and German linguistics and that the German tutor is an exiled German academic/SOE officer and that she was a part of this network the whole fucking time, from before Maddie even met her. And probably brought Maddie into it for exactly those reasons, though it’s hard to say
