Sand Backpack is made of a clay body fired to stoneware. After reinforcing the clay with nylon fibers, she rolls it into thin slabs which are then fashioned into briefcases, jackets, shoes, and other leather objects. Levine is intrigued with the way leather is marked by time and use, becoming a record of human activity. Simultaneously, the sculptures fascinate viewers because they deceive the eye -- convincing appearance challenges the belief that perception reveals reality. 

Seeing this piece in person was absolutely remarkable. All you wanted to do was secure the buckles and sling ‘er over your shoulder; you could practically smell the leather. Truly beautiful.
