1978 Philippines, Marinduque
I've first seen Marinduque in the indie film Sakaling Hindi Makarating (2016) starring Allessandra De Rossi. It was film about familiar journeys and unexpected discoveries — a literal poetry that extends beyond the postcards. Even when a story does not, literally, takes us to unfamiliar places, it will always at least transport us, figuratively, to unfamiliar situations. The film ended Alessandra riding off, into a metaphorical sunset, at last truly set free from the pains of her once broken heart.
The most profound tales are expeditions to the depths of human hearts and minds. And this time, my heart brought me to this place.
Marinduque has been in my bucket list for the longest time. Now that law school and the bar is done (read: oha abogado na ang lolo niyo haha), I perfectly have the time to continue with my goal of visiting all the 81 provinces in the Philippines. This province an is a heart-shaped island which lies between the Bondoc Peninsula at the south- eastern part of Luzon and the island of Mindoro. It is bounded by four bodies of water, on the north by Tayabas Bay, northeast by Mongpong Pass, South-east by Tayabas Strait, and Sibuyan at the south. There’s always a secret to unravel in every hidden corner and the possibility of stumbling into something wonderful is limitless. Maniwaya Island happens to be one of those undiscovered jewels concealed behind the shadows in the not so distant province of Marinduque.
Maniwaya Island is a long-stretch of powdert and coarse cream sand. The water is blue and clear by the day. It is surprisingly undeveloped with only a handful of resorts lined along its shores of rough coral stones. Its rustic vibe and tranquil state are its most redeeming qualities. Plus, it is totally off the path and uncrowded so you are guaranteed to have that patch of sand to frolic under the sun with for that much needed tan.
