We're sharing some of our favorite Women's History Month features from recent years, like this story map featuring some of the unsung ocean heroes from the sanctuary system: https://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/news/mar19/unsung-ocean-heroes.html
Dr. Isabella Aiona Abbott (1919 - 2010) studied and wrote extensively on Hawaiian seaweeds, called limu. These seweeds are found all over the island chain including in Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
Here, Dr. Abbott is shown at Hopkins Marine Station, where she taught from 1960 to 1982.
