ok so i need to provide an informal update: as ive briefly alluded to on here, i signed up as a presenter for mariowiki's 2025 mario awards, specifically for the "favourite mario kart item" category. to present this category i have prepared a fun, brief (~5 min) video which will be debuting in the awards ceremony forum thread on super mario boards tomorrow (friday aug 22) at 8:25 pm (eastern)... i wouldve posted it in the thread myself, but this week i have been dealing with some pretty serious life business, the specifics of which i would prefer not to go into--suffice it to say that i will be non-negotiably occupied for the duration of the ceremony. i have requested that one of the mods make that post in my stead at the scheduled time: because of the aforementioned business though, i probably wont be able to publish the video on youtube (or crosspost to tumblr) until a good while later (either later that night or the following day), so those who want to see it at the first opportunity are encouraged to watch for it on the board! (also watch the ceremony in general, it starts at 4! you can see the full schedule of presentations here, a couple of my mutuals are also presenting!)
in the meantime, here's a peek at the thumbnail:
In 1993, a Nintendo character guide stated that Mario is classified under the scientific name Homo nintendonus, indicating that he is not a regular human being.

It goes without saying that it contains spoilers for Spm.
Flipside and Flopside
Both places' names come from the phrase "flip-flop". They are different, even between its residents, since normally in Flipside they are direct descendants of the tribe of the ancients, on the other hand, in Flopside they are descendants of the infamous tribe of darkness, because they were the ones who helped found the city.
Flipside is a town between dimensions created by the Ancients. You can open up paths to many worlds from here, as the Ancients designed it, It's a different kind of technology than we've ever seen. And the white tower in the middle of Flipside controls the flow of dimensional energy, so it can beam people to worlds. That's why the doors to other worlds appear up near the tower.
So Flipside's convenient, created by Ancients in a space between dimensions. That means you can open up portals to all the other worlds from there. But on the other hand, it's strangely susceptible to influences from other worlds...
So the Ancients built the town in a way that would stabilize this effect. And that particular way was... The town was build in duplicate with both Flipside and Flopside versions!
They realized that light without dark, or vice versa, would never be stable. You need both sides for perfection. Having two opposite sides is the secret of the town's stability and longevity.
The residents of these cities are so mysterious that even in the official guide they do not have a specific name of their race, it simply states that some are descendants of the tribe of ancients (or tribe of darkness, in the case of the inhabitants of Flopside) or they can even be considered descendants of HUMANS. Even some are not only in these cities, also in Gloam Valley. They are all somehow different from each other, because there are inhabitants of different colors and some even do not have visible arms, like the most. While the Flipside residents have square noses, the Flopside residents have pointed noses, and the residents of Yold Town and Gloam Valley do not have noses at all..
My theory of the languages in Spm and why the habitants of Flipside and Flopside are differents from each other: The reason why the inhabitants are so different from each other is because they come from other dimensions. Let me explain. Approximately 1,000 years ago before the events of Spm, beings from other dimensions could have arrived at Flipside and Flopside (remember that Flipside is not a dimension, but is located BETWEEN dimensions), either due to wars, problems that they had in their respective dimensions. , and they came as a refuge to these cities, which were quite peaceful and far from any conflict. Furthermore, getting to this city is relatively easy if you have the necessary knowledge. They, mixing among the residents of Flipside and Flopside, may have had children different from the others.
(A:N) If you have any questions about my theory or about the research I did on these two cities, let me know in the comments.
Dark Prognosticus
It is a book of prophecies within the game. The author and the source of his knowledge are never revealed. Garson tells us how entire civilizations fell and countries went to war in his possession, even though the book itself had predicted it.
It's a book in which everything that will happen in the future is written. Someone hid the book a long time ago, easy about 1,500 years before the events of Spm. Some members of the tribe of the ancients became possessed and fascinated by the power of the book, since it allowed them to maximize their dark magic. They stole it, escaped and hid it, thus forming the tribe of darkness. The tribe kept it for centuries.
The light prognosticus was written to counter the magic of the book. Carson says something very interesting: The book also describes a figure similar to Dimentio, which led Count Bleck to taking him on as his minion after initially turning him away.
After the events of Super Paper Mario, the Dark Prognosticus "faded back into history."
My theory: The book was writen from an antecessor of the tribe of darkness, more of 3,000 years ago, before they leave from the ancients. He (or she) having a strong connection to black magic, he saw what was to come in the future and wrote all his visions down in the infamous book. He was also able to observe how one of his descendants was rejected, so that he could fulfill the prophecy, he wrote about his appearance, since he could only write about what he saw, do not name as Peach and Bowser. He also wrote about how to create a dimension where he was safe from everything, even the void, so that his descendant could be saved from his imminent end, by sharing blood, Dimentio had enough power to create it. And he could take the book to write new prophecies.

Dimentio
A more deep investigation about this emblematic character.
His name is a pun on "dementia" and "dimension". Like Mario and Mimi, he can flip between dimensions, but he can also manipulate them (an ability he shares with Merloo).
A theory says that the surviving son of the pixl inventor is his ancestor.
In the english version, Tippi seems to inmediatly recognize Dimentio upon encountering first. However, in the original Japanese script, her reaction is more ambiguous, afirmaning that Dimentio is one of the Count's minions.
Dimentio originally intended for Dimension D to multiply his power by 256. Upon winning the battle against him, the player character claims that the dimension made them more powerful as well, leaving everyone's stats unchanged relative to each other. This may be a homage to 8-bit storage capacity: 8-bit integers have 256 possible values, so adding 256 (although not multiplying by it) will overflow the integer and result in no net change.
The void is absent from the background of this dimension.
According to Carson, Dimentio approached the Count on his own, wishing to join him. While he was turned down once, he was hired after Bleck read about someone having a similar role in the Dark Prognosticus...
My theory: Dimentio is impure. But not the son of Blumiere or Timapni. The tribe of darkness knew the power and monstrosity of the impures thanks to him. As the tribe saw how dangerous it was and the consequences it would bring, he was left forgotten along with his parents. Maybe that's why he's an impure. For this reason, Timpani, in one of his many visits, was able to see him and his family being thrown out of the tribe. Since he has floating hands and teleportation powers, just like the Count Bleck.
But his mask doesn't let us see how he really is...

"It is truly enchanting to finally meet my hapless victims."
"You must be Bowser. I knew the moment I saw the flailing nubbins you call arms."
"Well met, lady. Your beauty is as refreshing as a slap to the face on a crisp winter day!"
"At last, the hero... I know of you from the festival of hair that dances upon your lip!"
"Now we must duel, like two gleaming banjos on a moonlit stoop!"
"Can you pierce this...illusion?"
"Your blows are like miniature jackhammers wielded by tiny, angry road workers!"
"The next time we meet, you will feast on a deadly eight-course meal!"
"I am not violent by nature, you know. I'd prefer to settle this peacefully, in fact."
"Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Again, for dramatic effect! AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA."
"You've proven to be worthy foes in the past, so I'm not going to make it easy."
"I'm saying that you no longer have value to me, so I'm ending your games."
"And so I strike, like an unseen dodgeball at an echoing gymnasium!"
"Ciao!"
