Are you betting on genes or freedom?
There is a distinction between evolutionary success and personal success becomes important.
In the evolutionary game, not reproducing is a complete loss. There is no ambiguity about this. Evolution does not care about happiness, wisdom, tranquility, freedom, or understanding. The only thing that ultimately matters in evolutionary terms is whether genes continue into future generations. From the perspective of your genes, a person who lives a peaceful, insightful, joyful life and leaves no descendants scores zero. A miserable person who produces several surviving children scores highly. That is why evolutionary success and personal well-being are often misaligned.
The remarkable thing is that evolution has produced creatures capable of understanding this misalignment. Suppose evolution has programmed you with drives for status, mating, reproduction, competition, and social approval because these historically increased reproductive success. The evolutionary "win condition" is clear. More surviving descendants. But don't forget that you are not a gene. You are a conscious organism experiencing the consequences of these drives.
Once you become aware of the game, a strange possibility emerges. You can ask whether the game's objective is your objective. Imagine a corporation hires you and says your purpose is to maximize shareholder value. You might reply, "That may be your objective, but why should it be mine?" The same question can be directed toward evolution. Evolution says, "Reproduce." You ask, "Why?" Evolution has no answer. It only has a mechanism.
This is where the game-theoretic observation becomes interesting. Refusing to play does not automatically constitute winning. If someone avoids marriage, children, career ambition, and competition, they have not thereby achieved happiness. They have merely exited certain arenas of potential gain and loss. The important question becomes what replaces them. If reproduction creates stress, responsibility, anxiety, financial burdens, and vulnerability, then avoiding reproduction may indeed increase happiness for some individuals. But that is an empirical question about human psychology, not an evolutionary question. Some people flourish without children. Some feel deep regret. Some experience relief. Others experience loneliness. There is no universal answer. The evolutionary answer is simple. Non-reproduction loses.
The personal answer is more complicated. If your goal is tranquility, autonomy, intellectual life, reduced anxiety, or freedom from obligations, non-reproduction may actually be a rational strategy. In fact, one could argue that modern humans are increasingly playing a different game from the one evolution designed them for. Evolution optimizes for genetic continuation. Humans increasingly optimize for subjective well-being. These are not identical objectives.
This may explain part of the demographic transition seen in wealthy societies. As survival becomes easier and education increases, people become more capable of evaluating their lives according to their own criteria rather than according to evolutionary imperatives. Fascinating aprroach is not anti-evolutionary in the usual sense. You are not denying the existence of reproductive drives. You are acknowledging them and then declining to grant them authority. That is a very different move. A dog chases the stick because it wants the stick. A human can ask whether the stick is worth chasing at all.
The deepest irony may be that evolution created minds sophisticated enough to recognize its own objectives and then refuse them. From the perspective of the genes, this is failure. From the perspective of the individual, it may be freedom. The answer depends entirely on what are yoy betting on. You'll struggle anyway. The question is, alone or with children.
