An interview with UK Phantom Mark McKerracher, by Andrea Stephenson, published in "Beneath the Mask" #7, Winter 1994/95.

Once again I'm copping out on typing up the text, because can't brain right now because life. Also, a thing that really struck me re-reading this was the supreme rulership of automatic Raoul hatred we had back in the day, so, trigger warning for Raoul hatred for that one person who needed it. But also really lol, at Mark's remarks.

Don't actually agree with the first bit he says, on Erik, either, but I get where he was coming from, probably nodded along entirely with it at the time; and don't have the energy to analyze it. This was phandom, 1994.

“Every Day,” Broadway, 1993. Jennifer Lee Andrews as Cosette, Eric Kunze as Marius, Mark McKerracher as Jean Valjean.

A lovely rendition overall. Jennifer’s voice is slightly fluttery, but still a basically sweet, pretty soprano, while Eric’s Marius is silky-voiced, tender and passionate, and Mark’s quietly pained yet resigned Valjean provides the perfect poignant counterpoint.

Someone once saw Les Mis 1400 times??!?

Going through old interviews, I found this quote from Mark McKerracher in 1994. I’ll be posting the whole interview in a day or two (have to correct OCR typos), but this stood out as the most times I’ve personally ever heard of someone seeing a show.

When asked about the devotion of the phans, Mark seems to think that we aren't insane. One of his German fans went to see Les Mis 1400 times which is in his view "a little worrying" but he says:

"I watch It's A Wonderful Life, and I watch A Christmas Carol, and I watch the Wizard Of Oz. And I don't stop watching these movies and I think if there's something like that in your life there's nothing wrong with it, I mean if something works for you and it makes you feel good, makes you think and it makes you have an emotional response then by all means, there's nothing wrong with it."

1400 times. That is truly mind-boggling. And wasn’t a typo.

Phantom memories: Mark McKerracher

Mark McKerracher is a Phantom I only saw once, in London in mid 1995 (between his playing the role in Manchester, then opening the show in Edinburgh). He was a friendly guy - actually, I never met any cast members who were unpleasant, just some of them were warmer than others and spent longer hanging out with us at times.

Anyway, I don't have a lot to say about Mark's Phantom, as I only saw him the one time, but I remember him being mixed. Sometimes he moved with elegance and grace, then at other times too stiffly; sometimes his voice began to soar and it felt like the emotional intensity was about to take off, yet it never quite did. I'd certainly have seen him again if he'd been in the London production longer. He had a fan club at the time, and I probably didn't see his best performance!

“In My Life,” Broadway, 1992. Melissa Anne Davis as Cosette, Mark McKerracher as Jean Valjean, Larry Alexander as Marius, Debbie Gibson as Éponine.

For Cosette Appreciation Week, even though the main draw of this clip is probably the Éponine.

Melissa’s Cosette sings with a sweet, crystalline soprano voice and sounds appropriately warm and passionate. Mark’s voice is slightly dark and heavy for Valjean, but he still sounds fine. Larry’s Marius is clarion, bright-voiced and charming, while Debbie’s Éponine (one of the show’s first examples of stunt casting) sounds predictably poppish, but still good.
