Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews… Grace and Frankie (S03E02) The Incubator Airdate: March 24, 2017 @netflix Ratings: Streaming Only Score: 8/10
**********SPOILERS BELOW**********
Awe, I watch Grace & Frankie and although when an episode is finished in it’s entirety I’m largely ‘feeling good’, left with somewhat of a 'perma-smile’ on my face… There is still the underlying layer of tension that feels authentic in nature. We’re only on Episode 2 here, but after plundering into its third season, it’s safe to say that the tension I’m talking about stems from multiple places, multiple characters, and for multiple reasons. These characters grow and learn over time authentically, which gives us a sense of attachment to them. We root for them, and because it’s largely a 'Dramedy’ that derives most of its moments from comedy, there’s still a very human touch that borderlines a real sadness, even through its laugh-out-loud moments. It feels real, and you can’t fake 'real’.
Right now Grace seems to be stuck in a rut… She’s lonely. Obviously she’s happy for Frankie and Jacob, but usually she’s been the woman on the prowl or at least the one more open to sexual adventures. It’s just that those adventures have mainly been based in sexual nature and not a strong, genuine connection. What Frankie has with Jacob is a strong mixture of both and while their may be a bit of jealousy there, I do think Grace is sincerely happy for her friend. Jacob has one eye on Grace all the time, and since Grace is stubborn by nature, just like her daughter, Grace does a bit of pushing back… Especially when she hears that Frankie is talking and bouncing ideas back and forth with Jacob.
It’s always a pleasure to see these two juxtaposed, just as it is with Sol & Martin, that’s why their scene together at the Tech Start-Up worked so well. Frankie is right at home in its youthful, off-beat, ADHD fueled working environment, while Grace is almost bewildered and out of her element… But if this scene had taken place the show’s first season I believe things would’ve gone much different, particularly for Grace, who without becoming accustomed to that playful ping-pong style of Frankie’s personality may have just been completely appalled, or in some sort of a catatonic, horror-based shock. Meanwhile we get to see Robert’s new carefree approach to life (after his big moment facing his own mortality), but even though he’s adopting a more Frankie like approach, his tastes are very much still comparable to those of Grace… Refined and structured. Seeing the two men dance in either room of their house to two different styles of music not only goes along with the theme of highlighting these characters colors and contrasts in 'The Incubator’, it’s also the epitome of adorableness.
'Grace & Frankie’ remains grounded in its mission to not only deliver its audiences a worthwhile, straight-forward story arc… But it also trail-blazes the idea that there is life after youth. For older viewers this may be a long awaited, fresh look at how life in their 'Golden’ years really is, but for younger viewers (and yes that includes us men and women in our 30’s and even 40’s - someone called me old the other day, so I’m a bit ripe with sensitivity, hence the direct definition that being in your 30’s is still very much young) we get to see that all the things that make us vibrant and human just don’t disappear or fade as you get older, not if you don’t let the fear of it get in your way. 'Grace & Frankie’ and all of its characters are always evolving… ALWAYS! It’s a beautiful, poetic way of throwing out the the notion that being old is no fun… Sure it is… These characters might be older and wiser, but they make mistakes, live, love, and play just as hard as their younger, tighter-skinned counterparts… Hence that 'perma-smile’, despite the difficulties that may arise.
So?

In life, sometimes it is easier to find ways to cope than to thrive. Especially when you think you’re alone and that all you need is a simple fix to make things better. Something which is hardly true for many.

I’m continuously blown away by the pipe tunes like this one that Mark Saul composes. Listen to those harmonies!
