Voicemail from Jackson, “Baby, I’m really sorry, but I’m not going to be back in LA for at least another week. I know it’s not what we planned, I’ll make it up to you, I promise. We will get to go on our honeymoon. I love you.” You sighed heavily as you put your phone down on the white marble kitchen counter. The thought crept up in your head, “Is it always going to be like this?”
It’s been 2 months since you married the love of your life, Jackson, but you still haven’t gone on your honeymoon. You were used to the schedule changes and long distance. You’ve been together for awhile, and knew of each other for some time before that too. Meeting Jackson was kismet; like it was God’s plan all along. You just didn’t know it was going to take years of patience and late night, long distance calls for fate to work its magic. When Jackson’s team reached out to Sony Music Publishing for a songwriter, you had no idea that the job opportunity was going to change your life for the better. After writing a few hit songs for Ciara, Miguel, and Daniel Caesar, the music industry started to take notice of who you were. So did Jackson. Jackson had become a fan of your work and wanted to write a song with you.
The late night video calls workshopping music turned into late night personal video calls. Something ignited between the two of you during the songwriter process. Jackson’s eyes were always bright and calming. At first you weren’t sure if he was passionate about the song or if he was really feeling you. He wouldn’t keep you guessing for long. Before you knew it, you were both catching flights and feelings. You’d meet wherever you could, New York, Seoul, Paris, Hong Kong, Bangkok. Eventually, Jackson would come stay at your apartment in LA. Those were the best 48 hours of your life. Ordering takeout and eating it in the bed you never left. You’d take Jackson to parties in The Hills to meet your friends. Then you’d fly to Hong Kong to finally meet his family. Jackson was really close with his parents and still lived with him up until he moved to LA (not counting living in Seoul for work). You loved that he was a family man. He was eager to be a father and you couldn’t wait to see him shine as one. You didn’t get to have a family growing up, but always wanted one. TV sitcoms about families were your favorite kind of shows to watch. It made you feel less alone.
That’s what makes the relationship hard sometimes. Jackson was gone a lot and it was hard to fight the feelings of loneliness. You knew work and love were a major reason Jackson moved to LA, but with his career taking off, it’s been an adjustment but being with Jackson made it all worth it.
You couldn’t help but burst into tears as you pushed your phone across the table and let it hit the floor. You’ve always supported Jackson with his career and you know how important it is to him; how much he loves making music and being an entertainer. You just selfishly wish that once in a while, he’d choose you instead.
Jackson
Jackson ended his phone call to you after leaving a voicemail. He was in the front passenger seat of Mark’s car while Mark calmly battled LA traffic. Jackson just flew into LAX and since Mark lives in LA, Jackson asked one of his closest friends and members to give him a ride. Normally Y/N would pick Jackson up from the airport, but Jackson was up to something.
“You better pray that this doesn’t backfire on you,” Mark teased.
“It won’t,” Jackson replied confidently. “Y/N loves surprises.”
“Yeah but you’re newlyweds and you should be on an island somewhere sippin tropical drinks on the beach. Or destroying your hotel room at the very least,” Mark said with a laugh “A honeymoon is a big deal, she might even be disappointed by your lying,” he continued.
“I’m not lying, I’m just pretending that I’m 8,000 miles away, when I’m really only 50 miles away,” Jackson retorted in comedic tone. “And we will destroy a hotel room. I just hope it’s from fucking and not fighting,” Jackson said with a smirk.
“Pretending is lying,” Mark laughed as he spoke, “And you better hope the hotel room isn’t destroyed from fighting. We know you like to fight, but you’re no match for Y/N.”
Jackson drowned out Mark’s lecturing and remembered that he needed to pick up the flowers he ordered for you.
“Oh hey brother, can we stop at this floral shop on the way. I ordered a large bouquet for Y/N, full of her favorite flowers,” Jackson asked, knowing Mark wouldn’t say no.
“Of course, just add the address to the GPS stop,” Mark instructed.
Jackson added the floral shop address, smiled, and leaned back in the chair.
He was pleased with himself. He loves grand gestures and Y/N means so much to him. He was going to make Y/N happy and prove Mark wrong.
Y/N
Still sitting at the dining room table, you wiped your tears away and felt a bit childish. You were expecting a fairytale wedding and honeymoon that would sweep you off your feet the way Jackson always had. He hadn’t disappointed you often. You’re married to a man who is married to his career. You know what it’s like being in the music industry. You pulled yourself together, grabbed your phone off the floor and thankfully no cracks or damages.
“Might as well text the girls and see what they’re up to tonight,” you muttered outloud.
Y/N: Hey y’all, I don’t want to get into it but I'm free tonight and for the next couple days. What we gettin’ into tonight?
Kayla: uh oh
Y/N: hush
Ari: What happened? Aren’t you supposed to be in Singapore?
Y/N: Jackson has to work, honeymoon is postponed.
Ari: Until when?
Y/N: Idk, his assistant is rebooking it for us.
Ari: You must be fuming
Y/N: No, well, I mean I’m sad but I’ll get over it if I get to go out with my girls tonight…
Kayla: You better than me. I would have torched the house.
Y/N: we know
Ari: we know
Y/N: 😂
Ari: 🤣
Kayla: whatever
Kayla: Be nice or I’ll be going to Elevate tonight by myself.
Y/N: wait a minute
Ari: You can get us into Elevate?
Kayla: I can get myself in. But, I been talking to this guy who is part owner of the club, so we can get in, no cover and no lines ladies!
Y/N: Okay lets goooo
Ari: I’m down
Kayla: And what do we say? “Thank you Kayla”
Y/N: 🙄
Ari: shut up Kayla
Kayla: Meet at my apartment in 45 minutes, we’ll pre-game and take an uber.
Y/N: Bet
Ari: See ya soon
No need to stay home and mope. A night out in Downtown LA with your girls is just what you need. You’ve perfected your make up and can do a full beat in 5 minutes. You’ve got just the perfect fit in your head, a bodycon black dress with spaghetti straps. It’s a bit revealing, but being a married woman isn’t going to change how you dress. You paired it with most comfortable black heels, and grabbed your mini black purse. A quick look in the full body mirror to confirm how good you look. If Jackson were here, he’d have you out of that dress and those heels in less than a minute. With no time to waste, you’re out the door on your way to Kayla’s apartment.
* At Kayla’s Apartment *
The Hennessy and Tito’s have been removed from their spot on Kayla’s mini bar and there are three shot glasses lined up. You, Kayla, and Ari take a few shots before deciding it’s time to order an uber and head to the club.
“I’ll get the uber on the way,” you state as you rifle through your purse for your phone, only to realize you never put it in there. “Shit. I left my phone at home. I’ll buy drinks for us tonight if someone else gets the uber.”
“I got it,” Ari replies, “But what about hubby? Is he gonna be upset if he can’t get a hold on you?” she continued to ask.
“He’s working and more than likely, he’ll be video call me as I’m crawling into bed at whatever Godly hour that will be.”
“Okaaay, when hubby is away, wifey will play,” Kayla egged on.
“Full stop no. I love my man, they’ll be no games tonight,” you retorted.
“I’m just playin, I know Jackson’s got you down bad. Never seen you devoted to a man like this before,” Kayla responded.
You thought about it and Kayla is right. Jackson had become everything to you. He is always what you wanted in a partner and despite his hectic work schedule, it’s easy to be with him. He makes you feel safe and loved. You’ve never had to worry about other people entertaining him and any mistake he’s ever made, he’s been good about making it up to you.
“Uber will be here in 5 minutes, let's head outside now,” Ari announced.
All three of you checked yourselves in the mirror, hyped each other up, and headed out into the night.
* At the club - Elevate *
Kayla did her thing, no lines and no cover charges. The club was packed, flashing colorful hues light up the dark club as you three make your way to the VIP section. Kayla orders a few bottles as if it’s going to be one of those wild nights. You pour drinks and toast to your friendship. You’re happy to have friends like Kayla and Ari, but you’d be lying to yourself if you didn’t admit that you’d rather be on a plane to Singapore with Jackson. You sipped your drink and danced along to the music as a few other of Kayla’s friends joined all of you in the VIP section.
Jackson
“Thanks brother for the ride and for helping me set this up,” Jackson said to Mark as he gathered his luggage and massive bouquet of flowers.
“Yeah, you owe me big time,” Mark replied from the driver’s seat.
Once Jackson had all of his belongings, Mark took off into the LA traffic.
But he might not get very far…
Jackson makes his way into the house you two bought together. It’s cozy and sleek with warm lighting. It’s meant to make you never want to leave. Jackson leaves his luggage in the foyer and swaps his outdoor shoes for his indoor slippers. He is trying his best to be quiet but the wrapping paper on the flower bouquet is making all kinds of noises.
Jackson walks into the living room thinking you’d be there. Then he checks the bedroom only to find the room empty as well. It looks like you haven’t been in bed since you made it this morning. Jackson called out your name, “Y/N!” he pauses, “Y/N!”
“Baby, where are you?” he asks as he walks through the hallways checking the bathrooms and guest rooms. His last attempt, he heads to the kitchen. Empty.
Jackson pulls out his phone and dials your number but immediately hears the phone buzzing on the dining room table.
“Shit. Where is she?”
Jackson panics a bit and curses Mark for saying that his plan might backfire. But he wasn’t going to give up.
Jackson placed the bouquet of flowers on the table and picked up your phone. There are no secrets between you and he unlocks your phone with your password. Your phone opens immediately to your messages app and he sees the conversation between you, Kayla, and Ari.
“She went out… to Elevate?”
Jackson’s excitement turned to sadness at the revelation you were out in Downtown LA and probably wouldn’t be home until 2 or 3 in the morning. But Jackson isn’t one to sit around and mope either. Jackson unlocked his phone and went to recent calls, clicked on Mark’s name.
“Hey Mark, you mind doing me just one more favor?”
