What is marker training?
Marker training is a helpful tool used in dog training during the learning stage. By using a specific marker word or sound, we can let the dog know he's done something right at the exact moment he does it! A marker is always followed up with a treat or reward! Using markers in our training is beneficial because it gives us a clear and precise way to communicate with our dog when they've done the right thing. We use yes as our marker word, but you can use anything you'd like. Some people prefer to use a clicker, the only disadvantage is remembering to keep the clicker with you. Just be sure your marker word is a word you'll be saying to your dog only when trying to mark behaviors. A marker is different than praise because we use the marker to specifically mark moments, while praise can be used throughout training to encourage a behavior to continue. Remember, timing is key! Be sure to mark the instant your dog performs the behavior. Dog's live in the moment, so even a second too late or too early and you could be marking the wrong behavior. For ex. if you're teaching down, you'll mark as soon as his elbows hit the ground. Training the marker word is easy. Simply say the word you've chosen and then give your dog a treat and do this multiple times in a row per session for a few days. You'll know your dog has gotten the association between the marker and the treat when he gets excited and looks to you as soon as he hears it! Set up your FREE consultation today!
