Happy 134th birthday to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge!
In “Cable Crossing” (1996) at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall/Chamber Street station (4,5,6), Mark Gibian took inspiration from the Brooklyn Bridge’s pioneering steel cables and suspended roadway. His artwork uses a web of cable panels that mimic the graceful forms of the bridge suspended from an overhead structure below a skylight. The artist “wanted to explore movement, using soft curves with hard materials." The lacy curves of the panels "echo the beauty of the bridge's cross-hatched cables and the feeling of flight as it springs across the East River."
