Philosophical Conclusions Drawn From Markov Blanket
The philosophical implications of the Markov blanket are surprisingly deep because they challenge many of our everyday assumptions about the self, perception, and reality. They are not conclusions that the mathematics itself proves, but they are natural interpretations drawn by philosophers and theoretical neuroscientists.
The first is that an organism never has direct access to the world. A Markov blanket separates internal states from external states. The organism only receives sensory signals and acts through its active states. Everything it knows about the world must therefore be inferred. This resonates with Immanuel Kant, who argued that we never know things as they are in themselves but only as they appear through the structures of cognition.
The second is that the self is a process, not a substance. The Markov blanket is not a wall surrounding a little person inside the brain. It is a dynamic statistical boundary maintained by continuous exchanges with the environment. The "self" is therefore better understood as an ongoing activity of maintaining that boundary than as a fixed entity.
The third is that perception is controlled hallucination constrained by sensory evidence. The brain does not passively receive reality. It continuously predicts what is out there and updates those predictions when sensory information disagrees. Perception is therefore an active construction rather than a photograph of the world.
The fourth is that action and perception are inseparable. We do not first perceive and then act. We act partly in order to obtain information that reduces uncertainty. Looking, touching, asking questions, and moving are all ways of improving our model of the world.
The fifth is that life is fundamentally a process of maintaining boundaries. Every living organism exists because it maintains a distinction between itself and its surroundings. If that distinction collapses completely, the organism dies. Life therefore consists in continuously recreating the conditions that keep the organism viable.
The sixth is that the organism is inseparable from its environment. The Markov blanket distinguishes organism and environment, but it also defines their relationship. Neither can be understood independently. The properties of one continuously shape the other.
The seventh is that knowledge is always provisional. Since the organism only infers external causes from sensory evidence, certainty is never absolute. Every model remains open to revision when prediction errors accumulate.
The eighth is that emotion is part of inference rather than an obstacle to it. Feelings reflect the organism's estimates about its bodily condition and future viability. They are information about the state of the organism, not merely irrational disturbances.
The ninth is that survival depends on minimizing surprise over the long run. This does not mean seeking a boring life. It means maintaining the kinds of states compatible with continued existence. Organisms explore, learn, and take risks precisely because those behaviors reduce uncertainty over longer time scales.
The tenth is that the self is a continuously unfolding process of self-maintenance. The organism is not a thing enclosed by a boundary. It is the ongoing activity of maintaining that boundary against entropy through metabolism, prediction, repair, and action. If we combine the Markov blanket with thermodynamics and evolution, we arrive at a statement that a living being is not an object placed in the world. It is a dynamic process that continually recreates itself by exchanging energy, matter, and information with its environment. The Markov blanket is not a prison wall but the ever-changing interface through which this process remains distinct while remaining inseparable from the world.
