Can someone who's more knowledgeable about Star Trek than me let me know if we ever see a TOS era women's dress uniform? I'm looking through screencaps, and I keep encountering women in regular uniforms at formal events:

marla mcgivers is such a fun star trek character because she acts like every dude whose favorite thing about history is male military leaders except she's a woman so it's a lot more obvious how horny that interest is. dennis from work will be talking about julius caesar and i'm sitting there like... cool. all i heard is that if khan noonien singh was real you'd be slurpin' that thang real good
So I'm in the small but proud camp of Trekkies who think that The Wrath of Khan is massively overrated, and I wasn't looking forward at all to the new "Khan" audiodrama (originally proposed as a series).
But the first episode dropped yesterday and, like...it's actually good? Like, really good. It actually dives into his backstory and why eugenics is bad and why "great man" theory is stupid nonsense. It even gives a personality to frigging Marla McGivers others than "pathetic simp for Khan".

Sometimes I think that if Space Seed hadn't been made in the '60s, several men on the Enterprise would have been explicitly attracted to Khan (not Spock though LOL), and Khan would have probably seduced McCoy.

Since the second episode comes out today I just wanted to post saying how much I enjoyed the first episode of Star Trek Khan.
I liked seeing a more human side to Khan and I especially like the writing of Marla McGivers. They made her into a more independent person who is willing to stand up to Khan if needs be but without going overboard.
I’ve seen several instances in long running franchises where in an attempt to correct for misogynistic writing of women in the past they essentially just write the character as they exact opposite of what she was before or pretty much make a whole new character with the same name. Here while she’s definitely got more of a backbone they still use her occupation as a historian and the fact that she’s more familiar with the technology Kirk left them and don’t randomly make her an ace pilot or marksman who never mentions her interest in history.
I really like the scene where she refuses to be intimidated by Khan’s story of Cortés burning the ships and corrects him about the historical accuracy of his story. As someone who loves history I appreciated that and it shows Marla standing up to Khan in a a way she didn’t (and probably wouldn’t) in Space Seed but using her established role as a historian (I understand the need to correct someone when they spew misinformation on history Marla, I dam near rant when period dramas misrepresent corsets).
Also, from a Watsonian perspective I appreciated Marla’s reaction to finding out Khan brought her to be a fertile woman. I expected her to try to confront Khan or something but instead she finds her communicator and tries to get off the planet. Basically going: screw this I’ll take the court marshal!
I also wonder if they’ll use Marla’s role as a historian and a ‘modern’ woman more. She’ll know more about the history of Starfleet and the Federation and if I remember my Star Trek history right, the founding of the United Earth, with its socialist utopia free from most of the prejudices that defined Earth’s history, came just after the end of the Eugenics Wars/World War Three so Khan and his people are from a much more prejudicial time and Marla may be more accepting than they think. Also, like imagine if she just had a copy of the Teachings of Surak lying about or has to explain a Killigon ritual to them.
I also think it might be interesting to see a dynamic between Marla and Joachim since she’s an ordinary human like his mother was and they both face prejudice from most of Khan’s followers. Khan also acts as a surrogate father to him and Memory Alpha states that in many ways in Wrath of Khan (Joachim is the one Khan says ‘I will avenge you’ to) Joachim takes on the role Marla had in the original script.
I’d also like to see more of the other augments. I assume Joachim’s father is probably going to die soon but it would be nice to get to know them a bit before they die.
I also didn’t realise we were supposed to be suspicious of Dr Lear but several reviews have pointed out her odd behaviour. I just thought she wanted to look more in depth on Khan and acknowledge what made him who he is but maybe get a lesson in not idealising him and other historical figures the same way Marla kind of did. But those reviews do make some good points and there’s still Tuvok’s line from the trailer about lies.
If that is the case then I assume she must be connected to the augments in some way. Maybe she’s Khan and Marla’s daughter but I doubt it. Perhaps she’s a descendant of Khan or one of the other augments the same way La’an from Strange New Worlds is supposed to be. No clues for her anonymous source unless one of the augments somehow survived or she’s lying and somehow has them herself.
Looking forward to seeing more of Sulu and Tuvok. George Takei does a great job even though he’s not in this first episode a lot and I liked Tuvok’s banter with Dr Lear. Although it is weird to hear Tim Russ’ much older voice playing a younger version of the character and the only full episodes of Voyager I’ve watched is the Killing Game two parter as well as some clips, I can’t imagine how weird it is for people who have watched all of Voyager several times.
I know some people dislike Naveen Andrews as Khan but while I definitely don’t think he sounds like Ricardo Montalban he still acts really well and I think he still gets the eesince of Khan’s character. Plus Benedict Cumberbatch didn’t sound much like Montalban either so . . .

Kinda add-on to #1133. The reason why Hemmer doesn't ruin TOS is because Aenar are in ENT. The reason Erica doesn't mess with TOS is because "Jose Ortegas" was scrapped for Jose Tyler. The reason La'an messes with TOS canon is because her existence removes the shock factor of Khan and any of his potential progeny being alive in the 23rd century. Also, how can La'an even exist as a weaker "augment" if Khan's type of human augment cannot produce viable offspring with regular humans like Marla McGivers?
