Valeria Marquez: 1910s Lookbook

An early 1910s lookbook for Valeria Rita Hernandez Marquez, the widow of Arturo Marquez and mother of Manuel Marquez. (Somehow I haven’t done an elder lookbook in this challenge yet...) Valeria has three grandchildren and lives with her son and his wife and her grandson Victor. Her style has not changed much from when she was younger, but the beginning of the 1910s saw skirts narrowing and shortening. Though Valeria still loves elegant fashion and her signature color green, she wears more subdued dark shades as a widow. Her traits are Loner, Genius, and Cheerful.

Elsa was in regular correspondence with her husband, Manuel, as well as her son, Victor, after he had shipped out to the Western Front, through the months of 1918.

One day, she received a letter from the United States Army Corps.

Mrs. Manuel Marquez,

We regret to inform you that Victor Jose Marquez has fallen in the line of duty. Our nation is grateful for the service of all those who lay down their lives to protect our citizens and our communities. We mourn with you at this difficult time and hope you can be comforted by the presence of family and friends.

Elsa immediately started sobbing. Her only son, Victor, though he had died a hero, was gone, at the young age of eighteen. He would never return home.

An early 1910s lookbook for Manuel Juan Marquez as a young man. Manuel has recently married and is a new father. He has a way with words and is hoping to be a renowned author. He lives in his parents’ house with his wife, Elsa, and infant son, Victor. Manuel is Self-Assured, Good, and Active.

Manuel’s Journal

Oh God, what a day today has been.

Victor has been spending time with a nice Italian girl, Antonia, and even brings her over to chat in the backyard. He is always either with her or his best friend Lorenzo. He and Antonia remind me much of Elsa and me when we were young. But when he came back in, I was waiting for him with the newspaper in my hand and a serious look on my face.

“Victor. Ven rapido. Come quick,” I told him. I saw his face fall. He is a good boy who never gets into trouble, and I hate to upset him.

“What is happening, Papá? ¿Qué pasa?” he asked.

“The United States of America are at war. We’ve joined the Great War in Europe.”

In Memory of Beatriz Alba Marquez Hernandez and Josefina Anita Marquez Adamo

Beatriz, who had married Rodrigo Hernandez (Valeria’s brother), had one son, Ernesto, and had been involved in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Though she did not get to see women’s voting rights legalized nationwide, she was able to vote in her home state of California. Beatriz was survived by her close friend Diana Quesada and preceded in death by her husband Rodrigo.

Josefina, the youngest Marquez sibling of her generation, had married Adriano Adamo and after failing to conceive her own child, adopted an orphan named Rosa. An artistic and sensitive woman, Josefina enjoyed painting and playing the piano. Josefina was preceded in death by her husband Adriano and is survived by her daughter, Rosa.
