Beatriz Marquez: 1890s Lookbook

A late 1890s lookbook for Beatriz, the third child of my founders, as a young teenager. Beatriz likes to dress more practical than her older sister Carolina, and is closest to her brother Arturo. She is Creative and Jealous.

In Memory of Beatriz Alba Marquez Hernandez and Josefina Anita Marquez Adamo

Beatriz, who had married Rodrigo Hernandez (Valeria’s brother), had one son, Ernesto, and had been involved in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Though she did not get to see women’s voting rights legalized nationwide, she was able to vote in her home state of California. Beatriz was survived by her close friend Diana Quesada and preceded in death by her husband Rodrigo.

Josefina, the youngest Marquez sibling of her generation, had married Adriano Adamo and after failing to conceive her own child, adopted an orphan named Rosa. An artistic and sensitive woman, Josefina enjoyed painting and playing the piano. Josefina was preceded in death by her husband Adriano and is survived by her daughter, Rosa.

Isabel,

I am so happy to hear of your engagement, and I have some exciting news as I am sure that you have heard by now— the state of California has passed a law that will grant women the right to vote! Our Tía Beatriz and I have been awaiting this day for years. I can remember my first women’s suffrage rally, and how Beatriz took me there as a teenager.

My sincere hope is that the rest of the nation will follow suit in my aunt’s lifetime, and that this will usher in a new age of representation and equality for the fairer sex. As for my spinsterhood, worry not. I find I quite enjoy remaining single and having more time for my art.

Arturo received a letter that confirmed his worries. His mother, Liliana Herrera Marquez, had passed away. He knew that it was coming— she’d outlived her husband by many years and seen seven grandchildren in her lifetime, but it still saddened him.

Arturo gathered his family and dressed them in the proper mourning attire to bid farewell to Liliana at the cemetery where she was buried next to her beloved husband, Alberto. He knew she could rest well alongside her spouse.

Even after the birth of Beatriz’s first child, a boy named Ernesto Alberto Hernandez, she still relied on the companionship she’d built with her friends. Rodrigo was often away and could not spend much time with the new baby. Beatriz was growing close to one of her friends in particular: Diana Quesada. Diana was unmarried and outspoken about racial and gender equality, and Beatriz greatly admired her for it.

On a rainy day in Oasis Springs at the Sagrado Corazón Catholic Church, Carolina Vera Marquez, age 18, married Brian Seamus Mulligan, also 18. The ceremony was attended by a handful of family and friends of the bride and groom.
