Mother’s Day Lunch at Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant
June-2021 marks my mum’s 75th birthday and as part of the celebrations for this milestone, we had a fun Mother’s Day lunch at her favorite Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant. For this year, the restaurant introduced a special set menu with the theme called “Gifts of Love” featuring delicious collagen filled dishes.
Since it was the start of new social distancing measures in Singapore, the restaurant setting felt cozy with an intimate booth seating for my lunch appointment.
黑松露芝士焗蟹盖 Black Truffle Baked Crab with Assorted Mushrooms, Garden Greens: A delicious start to a fantastic lunch with so much intensity and flavors packed in a neat little package. The truffle was not overpowering and played extremely well with the delicate crab meat.
美艳万寿果官燕花胶 Bird’s Nest with Fish Maw, Papaya Puree, Superior Stock: Pure collagen heaven featuring a silky smooth broth containing lots of fish maw and bird’s nest swimming happily together.
雪菜焖鳕鱼 Braised Cod Fish with Fermented Vegetables: The delicate cod fish simply melted in my mouth while the mushrooms, garlic, and fermented vegetables added a much needed kick to the dish.
溏心蛋伴东波肉 Stewed Dong-Bo Pork Belly with Marinated Half Boiled Egg, Pink Ginger, Spinach: Without a doubt, the pork belly was absolutely delicious. The marinated half boiled egg topped with pink ginger was a surprising combination that works wonderfully together.
鱼子海胆水饺 Prawn Dumplings with Caviar, Sea Urchin Sauce: The prawn dumplings were plump and juicy while the sauce contained a generous serving of sea urchin. Unfortunately, the strong flavors from the dumplings, caviar, and sauce combined to cause the dish to be a tad too salty. However, it was still within acceptable limits and we happily devoured the dish in record time.
官燕香芒玫瑰软心蛋糕 Bird’s Nest & Rose Mango Melting Heart Cake: The dessert stole my mother’s heart as she rated it 10 out of 10. It was a delicious piece of artwork with an orchid printed on a piece of white chocolate, bird’s nest served on the side with gold foil, and a creamy ice cream cake with two different cores to balance the sweet and sour flavors of the rose and mango.
Overall, Mother’s Day lunch at Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant and my mum is already looking forward to her birthday celebration staycation at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel in June.
