i posted my Destiel halloween fic on a freaking tuesday, so i don’t think many people saw it

so LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT

it’s a 33k story about a 21-year-old dean, taking sammy and his teen friends out to a swamp for halloween. it’s awesome, but then BAM!! dean’s childhood crush cas arrives (wearing the jacket and holding the sword from j2m’s entertainment weekly magazine cover, i might add).

so the kids tell stories around the campfire, play spin-the-bottle (dean’s Straight but he’d totally kiss cas..........just to try it....). except then SAM GOES MISSING OH NO

and dean, cas, and all the kids (a diverse handful of non-white people!!! because that’s important) have to search for him in the swamp. only there’s GHOSTS (that aren’t really GHOSTS), and cas has books on them in missouri’s cool library, and they’RE GOING TO FIND SAM IF IT’S THE LAST THING THEY DO!!!!

except they find him in the second act, and he’s fine and dandy, and has a cool story, so there’s nothing to worry about !!!

(also sam has a doggo and cas has a snek)

and it’s a fun adventure with fun characters - and (as people have been telling me) strikes just the right balance between spoop and fluff. some angst, but the satisfying kind that’s resolved by the end. AND A HAPPY ENDING.

anyway y’all need to read this shit ‘cause i spent three solid weeks on it and it’s probably one of the best things i’ve written. objectively, that is, in terms of characters and diversity and foreshadowing and parallels and overall world-building immersion. like, if you ever enjoyed the show, you’d like this. nowadays i always write aiming at people who don’t watch the show any more, so if you don’t give a shit about season 13, you don’t need to. ♥

and PLEASE GOD leave me a comment and/or kudos if you like it, i am a full-time author and i need to be fed in appreciation

Marshmalloween

In an attempt to be the world’s coolest guardian, Dean takes his seventeen-year old brother Sam and all his friends to a ‘haunted’ swamp for Halloween night. Even if the ghost stories are a load of baloney, at least the alligators are real. Dean is unexpectedly reunited with his childhood friend (and crush) Castiel, kickstarting a fun night of Halloween antics - marshmallow toasting, bottle spinning, kiss exchanging, and spooky storytelling around the campfire. But when Sam and his dog both go missing, Dean realises the stories his mother once told him are all true. Monsters are real. And unless Dean, Cas, and all of Sam’s friends can figure out how to bring Sam back, he might be lost forever.

I love your fics. Your stories are wonderful in every sense of the word. Right now I'm reading Hart of The Storm. I'm a Hart, of European descent. I'm also very connected to Earth. I don't know entirely why but this story is making me tear up in good ways. I'm moved for reasons I can't quite put into words. The way you treat the magic, the forest spirits, the symbolism of the Harts, the misconceptions of differences being evil or wrong, which has unfortunately continued. (1/2)

i love love love that you mention a story that i poured so much love and energy and probably magic into. i’d almost forgotten about it, but reading this message made me go skim-read it, and i started from about halfway through and ended up sucked in for 2 hours. i haven’t even reached the part you mentioned, with Dean and Cas and all their friends in the tavern, but oh boy i remember how much i loved writing that. <3

thank you. thank you thank you for reminding me about that fic. and for assuring me that there’s still good reasons to write the long stories with deeper meanings and darker themes - and one of those reasons is that they’re important.

and the weight of them doesn’t erase that they’re also beautiful and pretty damn fun to read. >u>

(i say “them” rather than “it” because i’ve written multiple plot-heavy, symbolism-heavy stories like Hart of the Storm over the years, and they’re always the ones very few people read, but the ones i’m proudest of, and the ones i would say define me as a writer in the long-term. but the few lovely people whose hearts those stories touch are always touched the deepest.)

i followed you right back, witch friend. i hope you enjoy the rest of that story, and any similar ones i write in the future.
