I go by Bailey on here. I'm not really one for social media and I'm extremely introverted*.

Some things about me:

I'm an American living somewhere in the Midwest. I like coffee, books, dogs, and musicals. I have survived 32 rotations of the planet.

Spiritually, it is more complicated. Convert to Catholicism when I was 17 and stayed Catholic off and on f or several years. I have bounced around between Christianity, Hinduism, and Western paganism for the last decade and a half or so. After much debate and internal struggle, I realized that Jesus is one habit I cannot break. I was attending the Episcopal church for a while, but after some meditation, I've decided to rejoin the Catholic churhc.However, I'm more spiritual than religious, queer and queer affirming, and trying to educate myself on liberation theology.

I came out of the closet only a couple years ago, a few weeks after m 30th birthday. It is my belief that God not only creates gay and trans people, He makes them equal to cisgender and straight people, and has a unique plan for LGBTQ+ folk. If you disagree with that, please, do us both a favor and block me. I will not respond or debate with someone about whether or not gay and trans people deserve basic respect, dignity, and human rights.

Speaking of human rights, this ia anti-Trump and anti-Christian Nationalist blog. In this era, one cannot afford to be apolitical. Everything about my person and everything in the lives of my friends and family will be impacted negatively by this current admin. I can't be quiet when so much evil is coming out and it goes against my morals as a person and as a follower of Christ to hold my tongue in order to appease some people who are squeimish about the subject. If you don't like it, there's the door.

*I meant to write INTROVERTED. Idk my brain defaulted to extroverted when that is the exact OPPOSITE of what I am. LOL

Banning transgender girls from school sports affects all children – why allowing strangers to scrutinize children’s bodies may put all girls

The US Supreme Court ruled that states could exclude transgender athletes from girls and women’s sports teams.

Inclusivity benefits all children

Just as all children can potentially suffer from bodily surveillance regardless of their gender identity, embracing inclusivity can improve the well-being of all children.

Research shows that LGBTQ+-inclusive environments can help all children succeed in school. A 2012 study of nearly 16,000 students in 45 schools found that the presence of a gay-straight alliance reduced truancy, smoking, drinking and suicide attempts. A 2020 study of over 895,000 children found that those in LGBTQ+-inclusive environments reported doing better in school, lower substance use and better mental health.

On the other hand, a 2024 study found that anti-LGBTQ+ language in youth sports negatively affected the self-esteem of all children, including those who do not identify as LGBTQ+.

Youth sports, just like schools and churches, are not just places where children compete, learn facts or practice their faith. These community institutions are places where children build the confidence, relationships and sense of belonging that can shape their adult lives and the impact they’ll have on their family and community in the future.

The scope of sex-based bodily surveillance by necessity extends beyond transgender students, and the effects of this surveillance negatively affects all children involved in youth sports, regardless of identity.

PBS and NPR were never beholden to the US government.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created so that the US government could fund public media without public media being influenced by the government. It was a private non-profit funded by the government, not a part of the government itself. This is by design. This was a good thing. It meant that even small local TV and radio stations, could afford to create media for the public good, without government influence.

This meant TV and radio stations for poor communities. For non-english speaking communities. For rural communities. For minorities. It meant that free and accessible media could be created for everyone, even if the government didn't like it.

That's why conservatives defunded it.

Because if they couldn't control it, and if it helped the people they hated, then they would have to destroy it. Do you really think that a fascist government would defund their own propaganda machine?

Not only is the idea that PBS before being defunded was propaganda wrong, but ignores the fact that defunding it is going to have long-term negative effects on vulnerable communities.

It’s St Kateri’s feast day, let’s also recognize the billions of indigenous martyrs lost to colonialism and its violence throughout the Americas and the rest of the world, and the countless indigenous communities who are still alive and fighting for their rights and suffering untold levels of violence and discrimination.

Especially since you can’t separate St Kateri Tekakwitha’s life and conversion from colonial violence, theft and genocide, and her story has been used for those aims ever since she was alive.

If nothing else, if you’re not indigenous to the land you’re on, learn whose land it historically is. Learn about the Native communities around you and what they need. Do what you can.

Saint Francis Solano

Saint Francis Solano (also known as Francis Solanus) was born into a prominent Spanish family and was a popular student. He became a Franciscan priest who wanted to go to the African missions but was sent to South America instead. He was known to use music, specifically the violin, as a tool to evangelize the indigenous people in the areas of present-day Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia, where he learned local languages and used his musical talent to connect with them and spread the Christian faith. For 20 years he worked as a missionary. His whole life was a martyrdom of austere simplicity, prayer, and fasting. He’s called “the wonder worker of the New World.” He died uttering “Glory to God.”

Kateri Tekawitha

Daughter of Algonquin woman who converted to Christianity and a Mohawk chief. She was orphaned during a smallpox epidemic brought by European settlers. The smallpox left her physically scarred and impaired her eyesight. She converted and was baptized herself in 1676.

Kateri left to live in a village of other Christian Native Americans and took a vow of chastity in 1679. She was known for her austere lifestyle and spirituality. Her resting place became a site of miracles for Christian Native Americans and French colonists.

Kateri's life was recorded by western missionaries, so her biography should be taken with a grain of salt. It could be possible that she had been abused because of her faith by her tribe as missionaries describe, but it is somewhat suspect to paint the Indigenous people as violent and abusive. It fits into a narrative that colonizers would want to paint of the non-Christian Mohawks and Algonquin they encountered. We can, however, safely say that regardless of propaganda about Kateri, she is a powerful and miracle-working saint and an example of perseverance, endurance, and austerity.
