[Conversation occurs around half-way into the story.
Theodore is sat in the living room of the house Martha and Eli work from. The three of them are alone - they are discussing the existence of more sinister creatures following several strange occurrences in town.]
[Martha and Eli are sat together on one sofa, watching as Theodore recounts an experience from his past. He is sat across from them, a coffee table between them. Several teacups sit untouched on the table, though Theodore is holding one. He does not entirely look at either of them as he talks.]
[Panels are of the events Theodore is describing: his wife, her funeral, the hill in the graveyard.]
Theodore: A strange sense of dread such as I had never experienced settled over me.
At first I had thought it was the compounding impact of every event of the past few weeks finally coming to crush me.
It might have been that, of course. And I am sure that it played a role.
Grief is a strange thing, as I am sure that you are aware.
But the day of the funeral, when I opened my eyes on that hill, it was as if I had never looked at anything before in my life.
As it stands, I rather wish I hadn’t.
For when I looked up, the sky stared back.
I don’t think I need to explain how this made me... somewhat nervous in my disposition. Aggie did her best to console me, but I’m not sure that I ever quite recovered from that sight.
[We are back to the living room, present day. Panels of the eyes are used as appropriate.]
Theodore: White eyes... too smooth, and polished like a fine marble. They held no reflections, and when they blinked, no skin covered them. Just... empty air.
I do not want to know who or what those eyes belonged to.
Do what you will with my account, dismiss me if you must, but know that I would never try to mislead you. Not as you have built up your career doing so. It would not benefit me in any way - I trust that you know that.
[His teacup is trembling, Martha and Eli look between Theodore’s face and his hands.]
Eli: You’re shaking.
[Theodore looks mildly surprised, down at his cup]
Theodore: Oh, so I am...
[There is a long pause Finally, Martha shifts her skirts. She sighs.]
Martha: Well shit.
[She fishes a small notebook from her pocket and flips to a slightly creased page. Martha regards it for a moment, then closes it, tapping the cover rhythmically.]
I can’t say I’ve heard of two disembodied eyes before... but it’s not the most outlandish thing I’ve come across.
