Why the argument?
Polina: Why the hell did we all show up in red? We're literally matching the building, this isn't even funny!
Martha: You're asking me? I'm not the one who picked the venue!
Polina: You said you knew this place!
Martha: I said I heard of it, that's not the same thing!
Atherton: Yeah, I'm not even getting into this argument. They could've pulled up a picture on this place online, after all, but neither thought to do it...
Meanwhile, since this beach outing is turning into an Academy meet and greet, the girls are all taking a chance to meet one another. Martha has already asked the other two if they would consider being her models later in the year, and while Polina’s not into it, Maggie is in - provided she can score free food at the events.
“Say, that’s the girl Frankie is dating?” Polina noticed the couple. “His Mom says she barely sees him these days because they are always together.”
“Yeah, she’s our roommate. And those two really are in their own little world, if I say so myself,” Martha laughed. From the looks of the, Rayen had nothing to worry about.
A nice summer day with the girls.
“Hey, what’s the deal?” Martha asked once Lawson went to sleep. “You’re not afraid of meeting a few people, are you?”
“I’m not,” Rayen told her. “As long it’s a reasonable amount of people.”
“The more you meet people, the better you become at it,” Martha reminded her. “Besides, it’s not just partying. At a certain point, partying becomes networking.”
“For what?”
“For making useful connections. Meeting people who can help you get set up in the world,” Martha sighed. “I know it sounds fake and vapid, but if I want my designs to get anywhere, I’ll have to meet some people who can make it happen.”
“What about using social media to get your ideas out?” Rayen asked, remembering Martha’s previous explanation of her exposure strategy.
“It all goes hand-in-hand,” Martha nodded. “Both are good. You make a name for yourself on social media, get a following. Then, when you meet bigger names in the industry, you’re not just someone who wants their help to get big, but rather someone who can bring your own thing to the table.”
“I thought you said the fashion industry is all fake and preys on people’s insecurities,” Rayen found a discrepancy.
“It is. That’s why we need more people who aren’t like that to take over from the old guard,” Martha reasoned. “Don’t worry, I don’t intend to sell out on my ideas. I still think fashion needs to appeal to everyone, not just to a select few who fit a narrow standard of how people should look. But it’s going to take some time and work to get there. Unfortunately. But I fully intend to work for it.”
Returning to their apartment, they talked about the upcoming school year. Their living situation was a little strange: after the students and the Crimsons moved out, Boris and Toris rented out their old apartment for the girls, and they were currently living there alone. They knew, that sooner rather than later, they’ll get more roommates.
“I wonder what they’re going to be like,” Martha wondered. “I’d hate to live with someone who’s really difficult or mean.”
“I’m sure your mother won’t let that happen,” Rayen told her. “Speaking of roommates, want to bet these two are waiting for us?”
The young man and the fairy looked like they’ve been waiting for a while. If the suitcases were anything to judge by, they have just arrived.
“See, told you they’ll be here soon?” the fairy told him. “You owe me a fiver.”
Waving to the approaching women, she shouted, “Hi! Are you Martha and Rayen? I’m Maggie and this is Lawson.”
