XVIII: The Moon – Damien

The Moon Arcana is associated with creativity, inspiration, dreams, madness, illusions, fear, fantasy, the subconscious, and trickery. It can also represent being attuned subconsciously to the world around, gaining the ability to sense things without being told about them or without anyone else knowing.

My entry for @martianunicorn‘s MapleStory Tarot Collab! I’m a huge fan of tarot cards, especially the Persona series, and having this collab like a wish come true! It was hard trying to design the card for Damien and bringing in all the elements, which resulted in a first very cluttered draft, but in all it was a ton of fun! 

Explanations are done below as it’s long.

Generally, I tried to follow the base ideas of the original tarot card, which consisted of a wolf and a dog howling to the moon, two towers and a scorpion coming out of a pool. The towers were meant to be ‘guardians’ of sorts, which I used the World Tree and the house Damien lived in as a child. Both had tried to lead Damien out of harm’s way, but ultimately failed. The scorpion was placed in the pool of water instead, only casting it’s shadow on Damien’s reflection of his child self. Scorpions are a symbol of loneliness as well, which strives the point of Damien being lonely as a child, despite having his mom and Demon. 

I used Damien’s wolf creatures thing (I have no idea what they are called) instead of a wolf and a dog to represent Damien’s loss of his old self the moment he joined the Black Mage, as his old, tamer self was kept away in favor for power. 

I had Damien’s reflection in the water be of him as a child to show his loneliness in his battles, but yet unable to do a thing as he continues down the path for more power and a way to revive his mother.

The Hermit, a symbol of introspection, a need and a search for something more (in a spiritual sense), solitude, and guidance.  To represent the lantern I chose Roo-D with her nightlight tail.  She is consistently Xenon’s guiding light and he always goes to her for guidance first.   For the staff, a symbol of the journey for and attainment of enlightenment- as well as power- I chose one of his most powerful weapons: the mechapurge rifle (against my better judgement... it took me...... 5ever), something Xenon attains only after successfully regaining some of his humanity. Instead of the traditional mountain to represent solitude, I chose a dark corner of underwater Veritas, the Xenoroids’ far away home :’)  Fittingly, Veritas means truth in Latin and this card also symbolizes a search for truth.  Would you look at that.

what themes are next? i would like to try steampunk

if themes does get chosen, we will have another set of themes (including steampunk) go into the poll, and everyone will choose. So far, some of the themes people have requested in the past were Vocaloid, Friendstory, Neko Atsume, and Maid so those will be put into the poll as well ^^
