In 2015, while traveling to Germany for the Frankfurt Book Fair, I took the opportunity to visit Strasbourg to trace the steps of a nearly forgotten giant of the Reformation. I first stopped on Rue Martin Bucer, where Saint Aurelia’s Church still stands—the first congregation that Martin Bucer pastored in that city.

Marin Bucer! Luther’s classmate, and everybody’s friend. Her magic isn’t too suited for fighting, but she’ll do her best for the reformation!

It sounds fun at first, but she’ll soon find the whole academy embroiled in bitter conflict. Marin hopes she can help everyone get along, but despite her purest intentions and kindest placations, not everyone will hear her.

She represents Martin Bucer, the reformer known for his ecumenical vision. He had surprisingly good relationships with people across denominations.

In a 1549 letter to Calvin, Bucer sketched his hierarchy of loyalties. It’s one of the great statements of Protestant Catholicity: His aim, he said, was “most fully to consent, first, with the Lord himself and the Holy Spirit, then also with the true and orthodox Church of primitive times, and lastly, with all the sons of God of the present age, regardless of whatever party they may seem to be through human infirmity.

Strassburg, they called it the New Jerusalem, … was where the Hydra-Headed Heresy drew up its Arsenal … Here was the retreat and rendezvous for Lutherans and Zwinglians under the leadership of Martin Bucer, the great enemy to catholics. This was the receptacle for those banished from France and the host to him who has given his name to Calvinism. It was here that he constructed the Talmud of the new heresy, that instrument of our ruin.
