We call Epstein a monster. We recoil and condemn. But he called our bluff. Almost no one is willing to admit that Epstein was right: His behavior falls well within historical norms.

So, what happened to change all of this? Why is modern Western culture sensitive to this matter? What made our modern/postmodern world different? This is the question. But no one is asking it. Why not? Because the answer is too embarrassing to admit.

No Antigo Testamento, Yahweh sofre pelos pecados do Seu povo. Ele não trata seus pecados com indiferença. Wir alle leben in Hoffnung. Wir stehen morgens auf und hoffen, dass sich der heutige Tag lohnt, ihn zu leben. Wir hoffen, dass die Welt ihre Sauerstoffversorgung teilt. Wir sprechen in der Hoffnung auf eine Antwort. Wir haben uns auf große Unternehmungen gemacht - eine Graduiertenschule, eine neue Karriere, Ehe, Elternschaft, eine Wanderung durch England - in der Hoffnung, dass unsere Opfer und Bemühungen Früchte tragen werden. Wir leben in Erwartung der Zukunft, und wir glauben, dass sie kommen wird.

Wenn wir die Hoffnung verlieren, verlieren wir alles. Warum sprechen, wenn niemand antwortet? Warum atmen, wenn wir der reichlichen Großzügigkeit der Welt nicht mehr vertrauen? Warum tun oder handeln, wenn es keine Hilfe gibt, die bereit ist, unsere Hoffnungen zu erfüllen? Hoffnung ist wichtig, um christlich zu leben. Hoffnung ist für ein menschliches Leben unerlässlich. Wir, wir alle, müssen in Hoffnung leben, wenn unsere Existenz überhaupt "lebend" genannt werden soll.
