“Fucking arsehole!” Hardy shouts at Carl’s retreating back.

There’s no point following, Carl will be out of the station before he can grab the dropped crutch and make it across the basement, not to mention that he has to wait for the fucking stair lift to take him up the steps.

“Fuck!” He throws the other crutch down to just hear the clang echo across the depths of the basement when it hits the first one and bounces onto the floor. It’s only satisfying for a fraction of a second, then he has to go through the process of retrieving them both.

James is good at reading Carl; it could be considered one of his specialist subjects even, but he missed this one by a fucking mile. In his post-orgasmic haze, he hadn’t clocked how deep-rooted Carl’s uncertainties were. He caught a glimpse of it Friday night, and that first night in the spare room, three weeks ago; he should have known there was more lurking under the surface. But it’s always startling to be reminded that someone who spends so much of the time playing up his own arrogance can think himself so undeserving of anything good.

They were good when he left Carl naked in bed early Saturday afternoon, sprawled across the sheets with a soft, satisfied smile on his lips, chest still flushed from another gorgeous fuck. It was all he could do not to get undressed and crawl into bed again when Carl pulled him in for a lingering kiss goodbye. As it was, he nearly missed the kick-off for the first of the boys’ football matches.

Dept. Q - Thoughts on Carl and Martin's living arrangements

You know, if you think about it, the whole situation with Carl living with Martin is actually kind of odd.

Not in a bad way, but if you consider how contained the flat actually is, that's a really intimate arrangement. Their rooms are in fairly close proximity to each other. There is no space to retreat and be on your own except their (pretty small) bedrooms, and most likely Carl's bedroom only has the bed and clothing storage with no desk and probably also no TV.

They have the one TV in the living room that they share. So if both are home, they'll have to arrange who gets TV time. (Knowing Carl, they probably fight about it at times.)

When they are both home, they are around each other quite frequently. Carl has to smell and be there for whatever Martin may be cooking. They have to share the couch unless one of them takes the armchair. They have to share the nonexistent bathroom and figure out a schedule or routine for it.

Carl might be woken up by Martin making noise in the kitchen. They see each other in PJs with bed hair. They see each other when one is sick and gross. TMI, but they will hear each other doing their thing in the bathroom.

It's like you live with a partner who isn't your partner but more of an acquaintance and it's really fucking weird if you think about it. It's amazing that they (more or less) get on.

Makes me think Martin must be a bloody saint to keep living there, also taking Jasper's musical escapades into account. Martin probably does most of the tidying and cleaning without ever being thanked for it. Carl really doesn't appreciate enough how much of his and Jasper's bullshit Martin puts up with. Give the man a medal.
