“Bring me your leader, the -real- leader of the kobolds.”
Ratsy stomped around a fountain in Cathedral Square. His arms were stretched out wide. He spoke in a low guttural voice.
“Bring me your leader. I will take them to the big candle that burns forever!”
The boy hopped onto the fountain’s edge and lifted a finger to the small crowd of children that had gathered there.
“And then Missus bear waited. Among the hundreds-no thousands-of kobolds that were there, two stepped forward and began bickering.”
He crossed his eyes and spoke in a screechy voice, trying to imitate a kobold. “I am true leader, I am wisest.”
Ratsy took a step to the left and pounded his chest. “No, I am true leader, I am strongest.”
A rosy cheeked girl raised her voice. “The wise one should win! Leaders should be wise!”
Next to her a flat nosed boy shook his head. “Nuh-uh, leaders need to be the strongest!”
Oaken
The wagon rolled through the Valley of Heroes. Oaken peeled back a bit of the wagon cover to peer outside. He glanced up to see stone faces. General Turalyon, Archmage Khadgar, Alleria Windrunner, Kudran Wildhammer, Danath Trollbane.
They stood as stalwart leaders staring heroically up at the sky.
What are they looking at in the sky? Everything that needs a watchful eye is down here.
Oaken released the cover and rubbed the side of his neck. The wagon rolled on.
Ratsy
“Harley the Gryphon flew through the heat. A kobold in each talon!”
Sprinting in circles around the fountain, Ratsy flapped his arms up and down.He came to a sudden halt in front of a round five-year-old with wide eyes.
“And then…poof poof poof POOF!” Ratsy jumped forward. “The gryphon opened its talons and down down doooown went each kobold into the lake of lava below!”
The crowd of youth let out a long “ooooh”.
“But there was one last kobold.”
Stalking closer to the round five-year-old, Ratsy squatted down and laid a finger against the child’s throat.
“Snitty, the leader. Missus Bear took him by the throat and said, ‘I hope you’ve enjoyed being the last leader of the kobolds.’ And then she threw him into the belly of the hungry volcano. POOF! Snitty was eaten by his forever burning candle!”
Oaken
“There we go, that path there leads into Duskwood.” Said the wagon driver. He looked at the Kaldorei a little longer. “You’re going into the belly of the beast in there you know? Nothing good dwells in Duskwood.”
Oaken pressed a gold piece into the man’s hand, the last of his currency won off of the Archmage in Boralus.
“Thank you for bringing me this far.” He patted the man’s hand then added in Darnassian, “Ande’thoras-ethil.”
“Err I don’t right know what that means!” The man called out as he watched the elf make his way down the twisted path into Duskwood.
Ratsy
Ratsy mimed carrying something heavy. “Missus bear carried the dying body of Mister Evenshade to lie in peace under a tree.”
The boy leaned against the fountain and closed his eyes.
“The elven body lay there still as old cold stone.”
One eye peeled open to take in his audience. Ratsy held silent a moment longer, drawing them in.
“But then-“ He rose and pulled himself up to the top tier of the fountain, “Ailune herself with hair as white as the bright moon and eyes as black as the darkest night appeared!”
“Who’s Ailune?” someone asked.
“The Moon Goddess of the Night Elves” Ratsy Replied.
“It’s pronounced ‘Elune’ you idjut!” Called out another.
Oaken
As Oaken trudged through the forest, the canopy of trees grew thicker.
He crested a hill and for a moment caught sight of the moon. Oaken paused in his long hike and stared.
“Elune…please I-”
The Kaldorei’s plea died in his throat as a dark cloud drifted in front of the moon, obscuring it from his sight.
Hanging his head, Oaken made his descent down the hill and deeper into the forest. Upon reaching a bramble thicket, he folded his arms around his chest and waited.
Ratsy
“It turns out that the princess of the Highbornes, who is always dressed in the finest silks-and really knows how to throw a stink bomb, had traveled far to find Ailune and bring her to Mister Evenshade’s aid.”
Ratsy pressed a hand to his heart. “Ailune reached into the dying elf and stole back his soul from death’s brink.”
The boy tiptoed around the fountain thoughtfully. “And that’s how you do it.” He stopped to glance at the crowd.
“The only way to defeat all the scary things in the world like kobolds and dying…is to surround yourself with people who help you make the most of your living.”
He slipped down from the fountain and continued walking, his eyes distant.
“Find the mighty people. Find the ones who help you to be clever and have courage, like Missus bear. Find the ones who take you far places yet always make you feel at home, like Princess Stink bomb of the Highbornes. Find the ones who aren’t afraid to follow you into dark places and help you see the light again, like Ailune herself.”
“It’s Elune idjut!”
The Rat catcher shrugged at the small crowd. “Yes, the only way to change a bit of the world, is to not try and do it alone.”
Oaken
A twig snapped. Oaken spun towards the sound.
“Are you alone?” Called out a voice from the shadows.
“Yes.”
“Good.” A pause. “You brought everything?”
“I did.” Oaken pulled out a small box from his satchel. An etching of a cluster of peacebloom was carved into the wood. “Though it cost me most of my earnings, a couple of dresses, and a pair of stockings.”
“Gold and dresses?” A hooded figure stepped into the brambles with Oaken. “This is going to end up costing you much more than that.”
Feeling the weight of the box in his hands, Oaken dropped his gaze. “So be it.”
Martley
An old gnome on the verge of blindness stood at the front door of the Sagelight Tailoring Emporium.
Knock knock knock.
“Hello? Hello?” She called out. “My name’s Martley Pinniwidget…I have some vouchers for a couple of new dresses and a pair of stockings.”
