Martyn Joseph, from Wales, Doverlaff house concert Oct 7
To be fair, I had never heard, or heard of, Martyn Joseph before tonight. Also, I only saw the second half of this concert. I missed Dan Dover “totally kill it” as the opening solo act, and I missed Martyn’s “standing on the chair” acoustic song in the first set. I was late because my supervisor at the grocery store I work at acted unmistakably uncomfortable with letting me leave the retail floor earlier than 8p PST. So I didn’t press the issue. No sense getting a hard-working american into some american-style trouble!
But what I saw of the show was enough. Martyn Joseph is sincere to the bone: fresh, passionate, True. He is the ideal songwriter, with the ideal self-produced independent sense of flair and design that every new-age budding-Bruce Springsteen strives for. His words bind and stick, for example: “…we are on the winning side…” when talking about folks who genuinely live compassion when it comes to proclaiming public opinions of the Syrian refugee situation. His spittle gently misted the front row, including the hosts; a familiar testament to an exuberant performance that spans genres and generations. Martyn’s dynamic musicianship is masterful, the kind that can only come from years of refining his own stylistic patterns. Also, complete confidence backed up by financial success and diligent cognizance proves it all the more. Martyn ruled the small room, not ten feet from where I sat, for forty-five breathtaking minutes. In front of fifty+ people, in a basement, in a place that is well more than five thousand miles as the plane flies from his homeland in Wales UK to Portland Oregon. This speaks of Universal Musicianship. The “best” kind of music is the kind that people other than the songwriter “want to listen to.” Regardless of where it is, who wrote it, why they wrote it, or when they wrote it. And Martyn Joseph compelled. He compelled us all to be better People. He compelled us all to accept our faults, through a beautifully “narrated” Springsteen cover.
And even after filling our hearts and completely kicking our sonic asses, he was real and sweet and cool enough to just simply hand me his guitar after most of the adoring folks had left, describe to me how his Boss Octave-3 stompbox pedal worked, and let me fool around on it (while excited onlookers filmed with cell phones). So unfettered by self-absorbtion. So real, and alive, and True. I am a Martyn Joseph FAN. Thank You Dan Dover and Cheryl Mitzlaff (http://doverlaffhouseconcerts.org) for promoting him.
Turn Me Tender lyrics - song by Martyn Joseph
And the pledge and the vow is you'll find if you seek,
But what if I try and find nothing but bleak....
Turn me tender again, fold me into you,
Turn me tender again, and mold me to new,
Faith lost its promise and bruised me deep blue,
Turn me tender gain, through union with you....
It's a beautiful song ... - In this song, I find peace
