MARVEL’S SNAPSHOTS: SUB-MARINER
This is a comic I had been looking forward to since I heard what it was about and it did not disappoint. The creative team totally did their job with regards to background and history, espically history between Betty and Namor. Now I was very hestate at first because all the descriptions of Betty being a “Mild Mannered Reporter” had me worried since she was a Police Officer first, before becoming a Reporter after the war. This will be a long post because fuck. I have been waiting for Betty/Namor content and not only was it delivered, it broke me.
We start off with Betty having a celebration with her brothers who have all come back from the War, she gets a glimpse into how her brother’s were affected with their “shell shock” aka PTSD. I really can’t remember Betty ever having brothers but moving on.
Anyways we see that the next day Betty has a date with Namor and it’s so freaking cute.
Betty mentioning that Namor hasn’t aged, just reminds me of this panel so much.
NAMOR YOU ARE BANNED FROM CONEY ISLAND.
Namor doesn’t understand why humans go to carnivals just for fun if it isn’t to boost morale during war time, but he apologizes to Betty and promises to have a good time. He even tries to make a joke! Not a dry sarcastic joke but an attempt at actual humor!
Betty asks how long do Atlanteans live, and for the first time we get a solid answer. 600 years for normal full blooded Atlanteans, and for Namor it’s uncertain because of his Hybrid status.
Also NAMOR YOU IDIOT. TALK TO BETTY ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS.
As they continue their date, Namor goes for a swim splashing Betty. Then Namor hears gun shots from a game and has a reaction, Betty notices even when he tries to play it off as nothing.
Namor plays a game to win food for a family. Prince with a salty heart of gold.
Next they find out The Shark, yes the same man who once stole Namor’s speedo, was trying to steal money from the ticket sales. Namor goes to stop him and gets angry at the man who once aligned himself with Nazis.
Namor goes berserk on his ass, seriously about to fight him until he kills him. Betty calls in the All Winners Squad to help Namor and to also stop him from killing the Shark.
Namor remembers what happened during the war, he was the first to see the horror of what the Nazis had done, and this is the first time Betty has ever seen Namor cry.
Betty tries to suggest that Namor speak to a doctor, which Namor would never do. I WILL SLAP HIM, SPEAK TO SOMEONE NAMOR, GET SOME HELP.
Betty is upset, she thought that with the war over then people should be happy again, but she sees that’s not happening and that people like her brother and Namor will always carry that with them.
She and Miss America go for a chat and it ends with Betty. I really love this comic showing everything from Betty’s pov and how she felt about it all. (Everett’s Tavern!)
As a big Betty/Namor fan, this comic is everything I wanted. Betty being her usual spitfire self as she helps Namor. Namor being shown to be affected by the war. Betty and Namor’s tragic future is all the more sadder when I finished reading this because they had such a deep love for each other. However this comic is now my favorite because it was so well written and the art is amazing.
Spider-Man: Marvel’s Snapshots suck. I am very disappointed that the whole story revolved around a small time thug and barely talks about spider man at all when we could have had literally anyone else??? why not in aunt may’s pov or JJJ? Anyways the other comics in the series, FF, X-Men, Sub-Mariner are good. Cap’s was just ok to me, but still better than Spider-mans
Marvel Snapshots: Civil War by Saladin Ahmed and Ryan Kelly. Cover by Alex Ross. Out in June.
Fantastic Four Marvel Snapshots #1 arrives in comic shops this week. See what else is coming!
So Marvel announced a doing a series of double-sized One Shots, organized by Kurt Busiek, called Marvel Snapshots, each focused on a character as seen through the eyes of the public, Marvels style. The first for have been announced, and most relevent to you would be Jay Edidin doing a Cyclops story, and Mark Russell doing a Captain America story.
Along with Brennert and Ordway on Namor! Very excited for these.
Optic Blast From The Past
In preparation for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Avengers Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars, here's a piece I did inspired by timbit_robin's Marvel AU for X-Men: Marvels Snapshots Vol 1 #1, with Scott Summers/Cyclops adorned in a Fantastic Four suit of his own.
Hope you like it!
