Where Brooklyn Meets the Stars

Wrote this summary for the @darcylewisbingohq August party’s Fic Titles Game (same prompt as the name, saving it for a future swap) and the Megacard 2023 challenge prompt Secret.

Gen rating, Darcy Lewis-centric (+minor surprise ship), 231 words

Bestseller’s author Darcy Lewis was at the peak of her career, but she stayed loyal to her roots, creatively speaking —she still made time to write fan fiction between signings, author talks and planning her next novel. While she went over a different name online, she enjoyed the carefree liberty to write and daydream about wherever she pleased every time, instead of coming up with complex plots and characters so deep that wouldn’t let her sleep in peace until she was done telling their story.

Darcy was surprised by the feedback that her hobby kept receiving after years, enjoying the comments she got with kind words about how funny or cute her stories were —while she preferred drama and quests for her published fiction, she stuck to romance and humor online.

She recently had a try of ‘real person’ fiction, for which she created a story that joined the forces of America’s greatest hero, Captain America, and the most wonderful old intergalactic superhero Captain Marvel, making them fall in love while running an ice-cream shop together. These two had never met in real life, of course, and it was all laughs and fun until one day she came back home to a broken lock and the fond look of Steve Rogers, accompanied by the first appearance of Marvel in ages.

It has been quite a while since Stephen Strange has talked to anyone besides the Watcher. Quite a very long time. Finished, 1,8k words.

“No,” The Watcher said, becoming serious again. “But... I’ve started to wonder more recently.”

“Wonder?”

Turing to face the shifting, shimmering wall blocking them from the hundreds of millions of universes that stretched out beyond it, the Watcher’s eyes brightened.

“Yes,” he said. “I’ve been wondering... ‘what if?’”

It was party week at the @darcylewisbingohq and I had my (I think) first try at the Fic Titles game! I wrote this for the prompt By Invitation Only (and I’m saving this for a future swap):

Gen rating, Darcy Lewis-centric, 104 words

Darcy received the letter in her office, and it took her a while to fail in the task of asking around and figure out who had left it for her. There was no name on the back, and no one in the building had recorded its arrival, so she was facing the unknown while opening the envelope that wrapped a pearl, folded paper with just an address and a date written on it.

Curiosity clearly took the best out of her.

And it turns out that Thor wasn’t joking when he told her the way to get into the Avengers was ‘by invitation only’.

A Monster’s Battlecry by Americaiuno

When facing against futile odds, and at the end of their ropes. A monster refuses to bow down and will fight with everything he has, even to the bitter end. Finished, 787 words.

I am proof that you are not true gods and have no control over me.

I am proof that free will is real.

I am proof that every choice I make does have weight.

I am proof that there is only one me out of an infinity possibilities and there will be no one else after me. I am one of kind. I am real and I exist.

I am alive and I am more than empty.

I am me…nothing more nothing less.

I may regret the choices I made along the way, and will not be able to wash away my sins, but that doesn’t mean I regret standing here.

I have fought so hard, so no one else will ever have to go through what I do. Or make the same mistakes I will.

I don’t care if I am seen as an angel or demon, so as long as I stay true to the beliefs I hold to my heart, and honor the memory of those I lost, I will keep walking.

A timeline breaks and splits. Choices and actions fracture off into infinite possibilities. In one particular lifetime, at one particular moment, a man loses the woman he loves and then loses the whole world in his futile effort to get her back: and in the sacred timeline, meanwhile, Christine Palmer hears about it.

She's gotten accustomed to hearing weird, unbelievable things, having Doctor Strange as a friend - and having him back in her life again, after five years of everyone telling her he was dead - but this newest weird thing is different, and maybe her own past with Stephen Strange has a future as well. Finished, 35k words.

Part 2 - The Riddle

“There’s a man in a prison,” she begins. “It’s got four walls and a locked door.”

“As opposed to six walls and two locked doors, like any normal prison cell.”

“As opposed to anything — how does the man get free?”

Stephen squints. “Does he have his sling-ring?”

She rolls her eyes. “No. Let’s say he’s lost it.”

“Ah, so he’s an idiot — that’ll make escaping harder.” He grins; the beard lends it a certain touch of guile. “What’s the door made from?”

“Iron,” Christine says. “And the walls are made from rock.”

“As is the floor, I’m guessing.”

“You’d be guessing correctly.”

“He should look in his pockets for something to pick the lock with, then — or something he can alchemize the carbon from. Did you know gunpowder only has three ingredients?”

“No such luck, wizard. They took his old clothes from him before they put him in prison.”

“How many Saturday morning cartoons has he watched? He can go out through the window on one of those bedsheet ropes.”

“There’s no windows in the cell, either. Or bedsheets.”

“I’m fairly certain that’s against the Geneva Convention. Was Grandma Palmer a war criminal, by any chance?”

“No sling-rings, no lock picks, no windows, no bedsheets, no magic — and this was Grandma Reisert’s riddle, not Grandma Palmer. She’s the one who kept asking me why you don’t go by ‘Stevie.’” She shoves him lightly in the chest. “Try again, smart-ass.”

“Oh, I don’t know — the man lays his hands on the stones and commands that they be made into bread.”

“Does he?” [...]  “But then the stones would answer back that a man doesn’t live by bread alone, wouldn’t they?”

[...]. “Does the prison have a ceiling?”

She smiles. 

“It doesn’t,” she says, “and the man realizes he’s got wings.”

“Kind of a hard detail to miss, wouldn’t you say?”

“Not really. People do it all the time.”

[...]“That’s true,” he says, in a voice that sounds somewhat thicker than before. “There’s your answer, then — the prison has no ceiling and the guy’s got wings. Simple enough.”

“In a way. The hardest part is probably just getting him to look past the locked door.”

“But does he, eventually?”

Christine puts her hands onto the Cloak’s collar. 

Thanks for choosing him, she would like to tell it, in spite of the fact that it has neither the ears nor the temporal lobe to hear her with. Thanks for protecting him. Thanks for catching him when he falls, which I know he probably does a lot. 

“He does,” she says, “so he flies.”

This Heaven Without Shooting Stars by Skaas

The first time Dr. Strange faces the self proclaimed heros of this world happens to be the one day the Ancient One isn't feeling well enough to do....whatever it is she does.

Set in a world where Banner was wrong and an alternative universe does form, and Stephen Strange's misfortune starts....oh, about five years too early. Ongoing, 23k words.

“If it is a fight you are looking for, you will find that we Sorcerers are more than capable of whooping your ass.” Strange growled, for once serious. Hell, he hasn’t been training for seven month for nothing, some of his clothes no longer even fit due to the new muscles he has acquired.

One of his light hollows flicker out.
