Author Interview: marvel-lucy
@marvel-lucy calls herself awkward, but her writing is anything but. It’s the perfect mixture of fluff, angst, and self-deprecating humor, just like her. She’s a wonderful ball of energy, which translates beautifully to each and every thing she writes. If you love the MCU, and we know you do, make sure to check her out. That is if you hate things like sleep and the outside world, because you won’t be seeing either for a while after you discover her lengthy masterlist.
You seem to love the normal fanfic tropes as much as we do, but somehow manage to put your own unique spin on things each time. Do you have an idea of what that is before you start or do you just kind of wing it?
I worry so much that what I write is clichéd, so I don’t know I do put a unique spin on things! Perhaps I just have a twisted mind […] I would love to say I have everything plotted out in advance, but I’m terrible for not planning ahead, unfortunately, and I have written myself into a corner more times than I can count. I, generally, have an idea for a first chapter (or a first scene) that I really want to write, and then see where it goes. Sometimes that works for me, but I do have a half-finished story that has become my nemesis as I still cannot finish it after two years, and I suspect that’s what happens when you start writing (and publishing) without thinking things through! I do quite like winging it though. There have been occasions when I’d thought a fic would go one way, and part way through an idea jumps out at me and I take a diversion. The Word version of my fics always have random notes at the bottom of things that have come to me part way through, and I quite like finding out what’s going to happen as I go along!
I started writing fanfic before I was very familiar with it, so I’ve learnt about the way it works, and the tropes, as I’ve gone along - and as they’re new to me, that quite often means I’ve been inspired by a trope without realising some people might think it’s overdone (yes, I have a coffee shop, a bookshop, and a teacher AU. Don’t judge me!).
You don’t limit yourself to just one-shots, imagines, or series, which we admire, but do you find it hard to keep everything straight? How do you stay organized for when you sit down and write?
Organised? LOL! I’m definitely not! I, generally, only work on one fic at a time which helps as I’m not trying to keep multiple stories in my head. Perhaps if I plotted ahead better, I’d be able to do multiple stories, and there’s been an occasion or two when I’ve got completely stuck with something and taken a break to write a short thing that’s popped into my head, but basically I write one until it’s finished - and if I can’t finish it, that means I often get nothing done for a really long time.
I have got a number of ‘idea’ documents - ranging from a sentence or two, to five pages - that are really unformed, but I wanted to get them down before I forgot them. I’ve also got a list of prompts that people on Tumblr kindly sent me a while back, some of which I’ve used, and some of which I’d love to, so I’ve got a kind of system, but...
