Mary and Tiger Lily stopped at their viewpoint and looked out on the view. It was a late morning, the sun had risen but was still low and the air was still cool. Mary settled her bow on the ground and sat down. Her long, dark brown hair was braided away from her face and fell down her chest. Tiger Lily took off the belts that held her swords’ sheaths on her back. They both enjoyed the warmth from the sun and took a breather.
“You know, Peter have come up with a name for you too.” Tiger Lily said and glanced at Mary. Mary looked up, surprise expressed by her beautiful features and Tiger Lily tried to shrug it off nonchalantly, but she knew it meant a lot to Mary.
Then Mary frowned. “Wait, too?”
“Oh yeah, I have a name for you too, but you know... Peter’s name is better.”
Mary gawped and smiled. Tiger Lily brushed a strand of hair out of her face. Mary grinned even wider and leaned over to hit Tiger Lily on the shoulder. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“My name? That I gave you? Ah well, I wanted it to be perfect but... It’s still not right.”
Mary chuckled. “Of course it is.”
Tiger Lily leaned forward and looked at Mary. “Really?” Mary nodded, beaming. Tiger Lily snickered and then squinted up at the blue sky.
“I was thinking of two names. Awendela which means ‘morning’. Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the morning. Pale and bright, cool and good. It means another day, another opportunity. Then Mimiteh for ‘new moon’, because it also means a beginning, a new birth, which I fascinate a lot. Morning and New Moon. It means that even dark times, and even death can be overcome and you can start anew.” Tiger Lily silenced. “Awendela is the most beautiful isn’t it? It fits you. You’re tall and strong, but beautiful. You’re young. This is your morning, but don’t worry, there’ll always be another one.”
Mary sat in silence.
“We can for short call you Awen.”
Tiger Lily took a deep breath.
“Well Peter thought of ‘Wendy’. The lost boys think it sounds like the name of a bird, but I think it sounds elegant.”
Tiger Lily stood. “He can call you what he wants, but to me, you’re my Awendela.”
Smoke rose from the distance. Mary stood. Tiger Lily secured her swords and smiled to Mary. “That’s our call, Peter is setting the trap at that point. Let’s go make sure he doesn’t screw up, shall we?”
Mary nodded, she looked speechless but smiled to herself.
“Awendela, are you coming?” Tiger Lily’s voice sounded from behind the trees.
Mary nodded and looked up, a single tear escaping her eye and she sniffled. She hurried after the princess, wiping her cheek. “Awendela.” She whispered to herself.
