The story of Mary King’s Close
Today we went to Mary King’s Close, deep down in the vaults of Edinburgh. The close (which is basically a network of narrow streets close to each other, explains the name) is named after the daughter of Alexander King, owner of several properties within the close in the 17th century.
Middle class people lived in the close until 1800, because it became illegal to live under the ground. After that it was a still a place to work and buy things.
In 1897 the close got partially demolished and buried under The Royal Exchange. However, it got reopened for the public ten years ago. We took a lookwith our tour guide Walter King – no, he’s not related.
It’s been said that there have been many reports of hauntings in the close since at least the 17th century. We went into one of the small dark rooms, deep underneath the city. These small rooms (think of half a regular class room, but then even smaller) used to be entire houses of families of say, fourteen or fifteen people. “ They all slept here on the floor, perhaps on some hay if there were lucky” , Walter tells us.
There is one room we specifically want to see: “ Annie’s room” . Annie was an eight-year old girl that got abandoned by her parents when they discovered she was infected by the plague. When they left her, they forgot to give they daughter her doll. The story goes that even after her death, Annie’s ghost was still there, looking for her doll.
Some years ago, a Japanese psychic, Aiko Gibo, went into the close with a film crew for a documentary about the most haunted places in The UK. When she entered Annie’s Room, she said she felt a strong presence. When she heard about the story, she went to the gift shop and bought a teddy bear. She left it in the room and said that she felt that the little girl finally found peace. From then on, people who go into the room leave a toy for Annie to play with. “Too bad about the Westlife cd”, Walter jokes.
We can’t say we felt Annie there too, but if she really existed, we’re glad people now know her story.
