It's here that Apollo is supposed to have flayed the skin from Marsyas after the god had beaten him in a contest of skill. He then hung up the skin in a cave, where the river's source is: because of this, it's called the Marsyas.

ἐνταῦθα λέγεται Ἀπόλλων ἐκδεῖραι Μαρσύαν νικήσας ἐρίζοντά οἱ περὶ σοφίας, καὶ τὸ δέρμα κρεμάσαι ἐν τῷ ἄντρῳ ὅθεν αἱ πηγαί: διὰ δὲ τοῦτο ὁ ποταμὸς καλεῖται Μαρσύας.
