I'm sure someone's said it before, but every now and then I think about how Kakashi blaming himself for the deaths of his loved ones is most likely his way of coping with having no control over the situations that led to their deaths. In an effort to make himself feel in control of his life, he convinces himself that his loved one's deaths were, in fact, his fault. His guilt is self-imposed, because the alternative is admitting, like Obito and Sasuke eventually do, that the shinobi system is at fault, and that Kakashi never stood a chance in dictating the survival of his team and father. It bites.
This is a sort of “What We Know for Sure” guide for Kakashi’s timeline, followed by suppositions after the read more. The first part of the suppositions section is going to be explaining reasoning, and the second part will be the years list updated with these suppositions.
For this, I’m going to be using the year Kakashi is born as year 0.
Year 0
Kakashi born Sept. 15th
Year 4
Kakashi turns 4 Sept. 15th–sometime after this, Kakashi enters the academy, as the manga states he attended it for a year before graduating at 5
Year 5
Kakashi turns 5 Sept. 15th–sometime before this, Kakashi enters the academy, as the manga states he attended it for a year before graduating at 5
Year 6
Kakashi turns 6 Sept. 15th–sometime before this, Kakashi is promoted to genin
Year 7
Kakashi turns 7 Sept. 15th–sometime before this, Kakashi is promoted to chuunin
All of the above should be indisputable facts, according to the manga, in addition to Minato telling Obito that Sakumo died 5 years prior to the Kannabi Bridge mission.
Everything after this point is supposition, or otherwise based on information that is not explicitly stated in the manga. All of these suppositions build off of one another, so if one is wrong, it’s likely they’re all wrong. I am not going to claim I’ve cracked the code of Kakashi’s miraculous timeline. I don’t think there is a code to crack. I don’t think Kishimoto thought that far ahead when planning out Kakashi’s backstory, and it shows.
Kakashi’s Age at the Time of the Kyuubi Attack
Kakashi turns 14 Sept. 15th; Kyuubi Attack on Oct. 10th
Kakashi is noted as being 26 at the start of the manga, and Naruto 12. This puts a rough 14 year age difference between the two, ergo Kakashi likely turns 14 a month prior to Naruto’s birth–thus, the Kyuubi Attack occurs Oct. 10th, Year 14.
Kakashi’s Generation
In Chapter 599, we see Ebisu, Aoba, Gai, Kakashi, Genma, Kurenai, Asuma, Rin, Raido, and Hayate passing Obito as they leave the academy, suggesting they were all in the same entering class. In the anime, Anko is added to this spread, but unless you assume she’s the near-hidden figure behind Raido in the manga, this is an anime-only addition.
According to the wikia, the following are the graduation ages of those listed above: Ebisu, 10; Aoba, (not stated); Gai, 7; Kakashi, 5; Genma, 10; Kurenai, 9; Asuma, 9; Rin, 9; Raido, (not stated); Hayate, 12; Obito, 9.
Even excluding Anko, this…causes at least one problem. Hayate, despite appearing here, is 23 in Part I, while Kakashi is 26, meaning he is 3 years younger than Kakashi, who enters the academy at 4. If Kakashi & Hayate enter the academy at the same time, Hayate is 1. Which is obviously not viable, so we can assume he was an erroneous inclusion, same as Kishimoto accidentally already having Minato’s head on the Hokage Monument in this chapter.
Gai is listed as 26-27 in Part I, same as Kakashi, and 30-31 in Part II, while Kakashi is 29-31. Gai’s birthday is Jan. 1st, while Kakashi’s is Sept. 15th. This makes it likely that Gai is born the same year Kakashi is. Ergo, since Gai & Kakashi join the academy at the same time, Gai would join the academy after Kakashi turns 4 on Sept. 15th, Year 4. Assuming a three-semester academy year, (Semester 1, April-July; Semester 2, August-November; Semester 3, December-March) Kakashi and Gai would enter the academy in April of Year 5, as Kakashi would be 4 and Gai would be 5. Thus, Gai graduates sometime after turning 7 on Jan. 1st, Year 7, but before turning 8 on Jan. 1st, Year 8.
Team Minato, Part I
The wikia states that Obito & Rin become genin at 9, and chuunin at 11.
Obito is born Feb. 10th, and Rin is born Nov. 15th.
In order for both Obito and Rin to graduate at age 9, they therefore must graduate sometime between Nov. 15th of one year and Feb. 10th the next.
Asuma, born Oct. 18th, and Kurenai, born June 11th, also graduate at 9. Assuming Asuma, Kurenai, Obito, and Rin all graduate at the same time, this still puts us at this lot graduating between Nov. 15th of one year and Feb. 10th of the next, as Rin and Obito are the youngest and oldest of these four, respectively.
…This means that, regardless of what school schedule you go off of, the remainder of Kakashi’s class was graduated early, prior to the end of the school year and official genin exams. This can be arguably backed up by Minato graduating at 10, despite being a genius and going through the academy ~8-10 years before Kakashi’s class–thus suggesting 10 as the expected graduation age during this time period (ex. Genma & Ebisu), and that Kakashi’s class was graduated early despite this, likely due to personnel shortages, as Minato remarks as being the reason Team Minato is splitting up for the Kannabi Bridge mission in Chapter 599.
Kurenai and Asuma are both 27-28 during Part I, compared to Kakashi and Gai’s 26-27. This puts Asuma as just under a year older than Kakashi–meaning, he must have been born Oct. 18th, Year -1, and have graduated sometime after Oct. 18th of Year 8, after Kakashi’s turned 8 on Sept. 15th, Year 8.
Again, assuming Asuma, Kurenai, Obito, and Rin all graduate at the same time, this puts them as graduating sometime between Nov. 15th, Year 8, and Feb. 10th, Year 9.
Ergo, Kakashi is 8, already a chuunin, and Obito & Rin are 9, fresh genin, when Team Minato is formed.
Team Minato, Part II
Obito & Rin are also listed as becoming chuunin when they’re 11. Following the above suppositions, this puts them at becoming chuunin sometime between Nov. 15th, Year 10, and Feb. 10th, Year 11.
According to Kakashi Gaiden, Obito dies at 13, meaning the Kannabi Bridge mission took place sometime between Feb. 10th, Year 12, and Feb. 10th, Year 13.
The day of the Kannabi Bridge mission, Kakashi was promoted to jounin, meaning he would’ve been either 11 or 12, depending on whether the mission took place before or after Sept. 15th, Year 12.
This also means that Sakumo died when Kakashi was either 6 or 7, again, depending on the above, because of Minato’s comment to Obito stating Sakumo died 5 years prior to their mission.

my villain origin story is that when i was in 4th grade (~9/10) i watched naruto for the first time n i really liked deidara n sasori. this was when deviantart was busting out sakura x akatsuki fics by the dozens.
i saw one of these fics. it was titled “akatsuki’s sex toy.” its cover photo was sakura in chains in front of the akatsuki members.
i did not know what sex was. all my 9 yo brain registered was “sakura x akatsuki means the akatsuki like her n obviously if they like her n she’s their sex toy then that’s a good thing.”
so i took the picture n made it my gmail avatar, n made my tagline “akatsuki’s sex toy.”
i used this gmail for everything, but most notably, for a group email w other girls in my class. nobody says anything abt my avatar or tagline. life goes on. i make a new gmail for middle school, n completely forget abt the old one.
come senior yr of hs, we’re fuckin around in creative writing class, putting arguments we’d had up on the smart board as writing prompts. we’d get 5 mins per prompt, then everybody would post their writing to the classroom page, n we’d read them aloud.
