Field of Heroes 2020: The Essential Workforce
Normally, this would be the kickoff to my Summer adventures. However, COVID-19 has curtailed all of that as Summer Festivals have been canceled due to Social Distancing measures to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, and there is no end in sight for a vaccine, as we are all staying away from each other.
The 12th Annual Field of Heroes in Westerville, Ohio is paying tribute to the Essential Workforce that has kept us moving through this unprecedented pandemic. I went to Field of Heroes eight times during its first full decade, and I did not pass up the opportunity to pay tribute to the Essential Workforce this Memorial Day weekend, as it most likely may be the only event on the DJBC 2020 Summer Tumblr Tour.
The event has been scaled back this year due to Social Distancing Measures. The ceremonies and programs were canceled, the 5K moved to a virtual one, flag sales and dedications are also not taking place. Only Westerville Rotary members could volunteer for the event this year, which added a drive-through option near the park’s main entrance off of Cleveland Avenue. The walking option is still there, but social distancing measures are highly encouraged.
In addition to the Essential Workforce, Field of Heroes paid tribute to the Class of 2020 from Westerville City Schools, as there was a banner paying homage to the Seniors from the district’s three high schools - South, Central, and North.
Field of Heroes is at 325 North Cleveland Avenue in Westerville through Monday afternoon.
