Hi! Im loving the chats, but i was just wondering why you think Paul would be the shows leading man and not Felix? Sorry, probably a dumb question.
Hey there, maslanian! This is not a dumb question at all, actually, even though it does sound like a pretty simple thing.
If this was a question about any other show, yeah maybe it would be kind of dumb. But, Orphan Black is a whole other beast. The thing that’s cool about Orphan Black is that it doesn’t really have a leading man. Both Paul and Felix are essentially supporting characters. But, for convention’s sake, it does sometimes help to identify who is technically considered the leading man.
Here’s why I think it’s safe to assign this honor to Paul:
1. He’s our main character’s love interest. Usually, this is a pretty tell-tale sign of leading-lady/leading-man.
2. His name comes up right after Tatiana Maslany’s in the credits.
3. Felix is definitely more of a side-kick character than a leading man. Felix is Sarah’s Kenzi to her Bo, Robin to her Batman, Mushu to her Mulan.
4. Paul is also his own entity. With Beth dead, he (as a character) isn’t attached to anyone in the show that way that Mrs. S or Felix belong to Sarah or Aynsley belongs to Alison. This places him as someone who has his own backstory and motives, which is important for his leading man identifiable qualities.
Hope this was able to clarify my thought process!
