Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Loverman
“There's a devil crawling along your floor
With a trembling heart, he's coming through your door
With his straining sex in his jumping paw
There'a a devil crawling along your floor
And he's old and he's stupid and he's hungry and he's sore
And he's blind and he's lame and he's dirty and he's poor
There's a devil crawling along your floor...”

L.J. Overlock, “Master of Words”
Newspaper advertisement featuring L.J. Overlock, 1908.
“He makes the words you speak!” Thus blared nearly every single advertisement from the self-proclaimed “Master of Words,” L.J. Overlock. Though it’s impossible to verify his claims today, Overlock took credit for introducing literally thousands of words into the English language. In this ad (pictured, above) alone, Overlock introduced two new words: “whilly-whoppers” and “do-do dodie-boos.”
“She's close, her eyes a darker blue in the afternoon light and very wide. Her lips open as if she has more to say, but he doesn’t give her a chance. He kisses her before he can think about how stupid it is, how reckless, and is astounded whe she kisses him back, even putting her right hand on the nape of his neck to make their contact a little firmer. It goes on for no more than five seconds, but it seems much longer to Hodges, who hasn’t had a kiss like this one in quite awhile.
She pulls back, brushes a hand through his hair, and says, “I’ve wanted to do that all afternoon. Now let’s go upstairs. I’ll make coffee and you make your report.”
But there’s no report until much later, and no coffee at all.”
