@grinlinggibbons300 Centuries in the Making opened @compton_verney on Saturday, and we wanted to give you a little taste of the exhibition experience. On your way through the park to and from the gallery you'll cross the Upper Bridge (built 1770), guarded by four sphinxes. After entering the exhibition, begin by journeying with Gibbons along a timeline of his life and turbulent times and then turn the corner into the galleries, where you can feast your eyes on: 1. The incredible Kirtlington Panel, abundant with fish and fowl 2. Carved limewood drop with one of Gibbons' iconic lobsters 3. The sinuous head of a life-size horse carved for the Line of Kings in the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London 4. Two films made for the exhibition by Vikki Jenner; the screen here (on the wall behind the horse) shows the production of detailed 3D scans of Gibbons' Crucifixion, at Dunham Massey. 5. Carved picture surround (on loan from Abingdon Town Hall Museum), its mirror reflecting a view of the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge 6. 'The Genteel Companion; being exact Directions for the Recorder: with a Collection of the Best and Newest Tunes ...' (on loan from the British Library) 7.
