In this AU, Byakuya Togami is less of a mastermind and more of a proctor of despair... hence the AU name! Junko got her claws in deep (figuratively and, in some ways, literally!)

One could argue that Junko is sane in the sense that she is in her right mind (even if her views are... far from what would typically be considered sane). The same could not be argued for this AU version of Byakuya. He has reached the point of no return and gone far past it.

(but just because he cannot return to who he was does not mean all hope is lost)

Co-Masterminds Byakuya and Junko?

Just thinking of this because running a KG has to be expensive beyond belief and Junko could use him to spread despair so fast.

Having to work with Junko was its own kind of despair, one that Byakuya was more than willing to subject himself to. Junko’s ideas were world-shaking, and he could provide the financial backing.

Within the killing game, he pretended to not know anything. And because his classmates were mostly morons, he didn’t have to worry about anyone accurately reading him.

Of course, he wouldn’t put it past Junko to kill him like she killed her own sister, so he participated in order to secure his own life. Nobody would be killing him if he could help it.

Junko found that perfectly despairful as well, since she had at one point considered killing him in the game to bring her even more despair. Either way, she got her despair fix.

Having one of the smarter of their classmates being one of the masterminds, when it was theorized there was only one, was going to destroy whoever was left. Frankly, Byakuya couldn’t wait.
