Reward charts are a great form of positive discipline. Positive reinforcement is a great way to guide your child toward more desirable behaviors.
Preschool age children respond very well to reward charts as do elementary school kids. Punishments such as time outs and loss of privileges work well when partnered with opportunities for a child to celebrate their successes. Teaching your child appropriate behavior is just as important as teaching them inappropriate behavior.
I made this chart for my 3 year old son using pictures of items that represent things he is working on like staying dry at night, cleaning up his toys, playing nice with friends, showing good table manners, and helping with our dog. Every night before bed we talk about what he did well that day and he gets to put a stamp on each item he accomplished that day.
I made this chart using Word and laminated it at an office supply store.
I let Ben help me choose the pictures which helped him get excited for this activity. The fact that it’s laminated means that every week I can clean it off and we can start over again. :)
