Mata Kucing Yang Menyeramkan
Mata Kucing flowers 💐 are being pollinated. Quite happy to witness the insect was busy doing it's job as a pollinator. Those are the photos I took from my home. We have about 3 mature trees of Mata Kucing. Probably not everyone knows about Mata Kucing. Just a brief information about this fruit. Mata Kucing is a tropical fruit whose name is derived from Malay words, which when translated literally means 'Cat's Eye'. It belongs to the Sapindaceae family. The scientific name is Euphoria malaiense. It is a close relative of Longan (scientific name is Euphoria longana). You can see that these fruit plants are distributed throughout Borneo, Sumatera, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The prefered climate is of course tropical humid conditions. It's harvested when fruits are fully brown. We eat these fruits because of their sweet translucent, white flesh, and some of their benefits such as: 1. It has cooling effect on our body, 2. It could treat indigestion and stomach ache , 3. The flesh revitalize the body and prevents the body from tiredness, 4. It could be used as appetite booster, 5. It contains phenolic acid and others compounds especially in the seeds, which are antioxidants, 6. Many more.
Strange Fruit
Sorry for being MIA for quite a while!! It had been quite a hectic week. Before you know it's already the time of the year for Ramadan - the fasting month for the Muslims - so I'd like to take this opportunity to wish fellow Muslims a good fasting month! Hopefully this month will provide spiritual and inner peace for all of us :)
Back on the food front, I found these strange fruits during one of my foraging sessions in the local pasar minggu (weekend market) a few weeks back. They look like a bunch of grapes, only bigger and...bumpier. And as purple as a perfectly ripe mangosteen.
The shell, which is thin and eggshell-hard, cracks open like a buah keranji (which you can find out more about here revealing a fruit not unlike longan, or its local subspecies, Mata Kucing (literally named 'Cat's Eye' because of its globular shape with translucent flesh from which you can see the seed within, like a cat's eye - http://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mata_Kucing)
In fact the seller told me that this IS Mata Kucing, even though the fruit looks unlike any Mata Kucing fruit I've ever seen.
But once free of its puzzling shell, the naked fruit does look a little like fleshy version of a longan or Mata Kucing but the flavour is far more complex. It's sweet with a slightly rubbery, chewy texture reminiscent of an attap chee, or nipah seeds. The smell is slightly more pungent too. Eaten fresh on the day it is bought, the flesh is crisper and sweeter. Eaten a few days afterwards, the texture is slightly more mushy and slimy, though it is no less sweet.
This fruit is truly a puzzle. It is, from it's mix of familiar yet strange profile makes me think of what a fruit will look like if a longan of mangosteen descent married a buah keranji, and had an affair with attap chee on the side. If that makes sense at all.
