Sis went to Batam, Indonesia 🇮🇩 for their department retreat and she asked what flavours I want for the Layer Cakes 🍰 or Kueh Lapis (千层糕) for which she is ordering from Sun Li by Batam Layer Cakes. Also known as Thousand Layer Cake, Spekkoek or Kueh Lapis Legit. Not to be confused another dessert, also name Kueh Lapis (九层糕). The Indonesia Layers Cake (印尼千层糕) is baked while the other one is steamed.
She shared with her colleague, so each person gets half the cake but received two different flavours. The first one I sliced is the Mocha Layer Cake (摩卡咖啡千层糕). Seen from the side, can you count how many layers in total? Each layer must be top baked before applying the next layer. In-between applying the next layer, the cake 🍰 must be compacted so each layer is even and flat. Even with all the butter in the cake, the chocolate 🍫 flavoured coffee ☕ shine through giving it a fragrant indulgence.
The other flavour that sis bought is Nutella Layer Cake (意榛滋千层糕). On the surface are criss-crossing lines of the hazelnut cocoa spread. From the side view, one can see that the spread is only applied every two layers and far apart. Taste wise, the hazelnut cocoa is not pronounced as the buttery 🧈 base of the cake 🍰 overpowered it. Adding Nutella to the batter and alternating the layers might be a better option and/or sprinkling crushed Ferrero Rocher chocolate on top also add a crunchy texture.
The Mocha Layer Cake (摩卡咖啡千层糕) I like it as it carries an aromatic flavour of chocolaty coffee without being on the strong side. Here, I paired it with my less sweet Milk Tea ☕️ with a sachet of ginger powder added. The Nutella Layer Cake (意榛滋千层糕) was a last minute decision as sis said no one was ordering the pineapple flavoured one which I originally wanted. The nutty hazelnut flavour grew on me as I munched on a second piece. 😋
