Matchmove Evaluation
This Project has been a great one for me. I loved doing every minute of the project and I am pleased with my final outcome. This is not something I do, I usually don’t like my work but here I am pleased by what I have achieved. It has helped that I chose a idea / film that I really enjoy and can get stuck in to doing the film proud and creating something good to see / watch.
At the start of this project I had a few ideas of what to do for the matchmove project. I've always been interested in doing a face track of sorts, as this is really cool and something that most VFX artists have to do these days. I liked the look of the Two Face effect the Dark Knight and the Half Faced Man form Doctor Who. These two were really great example of face tracking. But I felt I still wasn't at that level yet to do the effect justice so I decided to put off those ideas again for another day but one day I will do a digital makeup like that, maybe in the third year. But after seeing the film 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was really inspired by the helmet effect and wanted to replicate that in some. It was a really cool effect and one i thought i could pull of to some extent.
I started story boarding the idea down my initial idea was to create a blu ray advert to romote the release of the film for home release. This I thought was a very strong idea and one which had great narrative purpose. After my really bad tracking project, I wanted to show and improve my narrative skills not only to my lecturers but to myself. This idea helped me to show that. The other idea I story boarded was basically the same idea but without the Blu ray being found. It was just the character waking around the planet and takes helmet off and look out. Done. This was simple. But it had no narrative, just a load of shots strung together to o end. With all my work I have cliffhangers of sorts, this is basically because of shoddy writing on my part, and gives me option to come back to it one day. But Ive don this so many times I want a change. So I decided on the blu ray advert idea.
This project it gave me the chance to really use PF Track and try to understand tracking a little better. The tracking side went fairly smoothly which I am very surprised about, as in the past it has not worked and not a very usable track has been exported. But on this occasion it all worked fine, I spent days in PF just user tracking sports on my face. And those were the ones I added myself. The tracks all went fine apart from one shot where the point cloud was all stretched and did not resemble the shape of my head at all. No idea what went wrong here, the right film back was imputed and the focal length was exact as I jotted that down in the studio after the scene. But all worked fine when I did a object track.
This project also gave me the chance to integrate CG with live action, something I haven't really done on this scale before. Ive done little pieces like in my motion posters but this was something completely different. Making the Maya renders look real was a challenge. I think I managed to pull this off but still room for improvement, I still learning how to use the hypershade and such and how to create proper texture maps. But his project was a great learning point and one I can use for my future projects. Also this was the first time I rendered with render passes. Something Ive seen done before like in industry showreels but I never thought to make them before. So this project I did that and the renders look far better than just Maya beauty pass, the flexibility of changing colours was great and this meant I could render one pass again instead of the entire image. Something that would have come in handy with my motion posters. But Imam very pleased with my Maya renders like I said room for improvement as always but very pleased.
After Effects was very good for this project and gave me a good chance to composite CG into a live action environment, this case being a matte painting. I’ve done this before in the motion posters brief but not properly, so this was a great experience and a learning curve for me. Understanding colour and light was a challenge a joy to put to practice. I would have liked to used Nuke for this project but we were still learning it so the possibility of using it and getting a good result first time is something I felt could not have been done. I knew I could pull of the effects in After Effects and didn't want to make a bad submission just so I could use Nuke. But I plan on using nuke for my FMP this year to really get t grips with it for the third year.
The matte painting side of this project I am very pleased with. In all honestly I think this is the best part of the video, apart from the dad dancing at the end of course. The pictures are 100% mine that I have taken and managed to create a big landscape that genuinely looks alien is awesome to me. This is the first time really Ive create my painting with all my own pictures. Something I wanted to do for a long time, this project has given me a good step for the matte painting brief.
Overall I am pleased with my outcome and how the project went. Time management was good on the best part, but with a bit more time I could have gone back a redone a few little error in the track. I am very pleased with the project and feel far better with these than my outcome for the tracking project previous.
Completed breakdown for the match move project
Finished Video!
I am very pleased with this outcome. Im usually never happy with my work but on this occasion I am very happy with this. I know there is stuff I can change but i think this is very strong submission.
ALL DONE!
All the shots are now completed. I am really happy with how they have turned out. The all look amazing now into premiere to edit all the footage together. At this point I have edited one shot to make the trailer more concise, and fit together better. The shot in question was a behind shot of me walking into scene and bending down to pick up the Blu ray, but in the matte painting stage I added the blu ray on a higher up rock s the shot doesnt make any sense. But it works better without it in my opinion.
Oblivion
Ive always been inspired by the GUI in Oblivion. Its such a clean and sophisticated design. I does the job effectively and each widget is very clear to read. Im going to use these as a basiss of the Starlord helmet. In particular the little widgets t has to show certain operations.
