Black Lives Matter: ARMY Match BTS Donation and Donate $1 Million
When we were kids and still learning the ways of the world, we often assumed that to make a change, we must have immense wealth and power. But what if we told you that on June 7th, a fandom decided that they will come together to raise $1 Million to share their support for an important cause by contributing and encouraging others to donate as small an amount as $1?
Because every dollar counts.
Yes, ARMY from different parts of the world gathered online to start a project #MatchAMillion to match BTS donation to Black Lives Matter. The group, according to the report by Variety, has donated the amount to the organizations to show their support for the fight against racial discrimination. Black Lives Matter re-gained momentum after the video of George Floyd being murdered by a police officer went viral, leading to outrage amongst people around the globe. In turn, people took online and offline to demand justice for Floyd and several others who have been the victim of systematic oppression due to anti-black racism.
OIAA has always believed in micro-donations. When a large group of people come together and donate, we are able to create a huge impact. Upon the fandom’s request to support BLM, OIAA created a master thread, updating it from time to time, as new resources poured in. On 1st June, we went on to make a Carrd to help ARMYs provide support to multiple organizations, either through individual donations to a specific non-profit or through split donations to multiple organizations. These organizations were thoroughly researched upon, vetted, and finally added to the list after we were sure that they fit our criteria.
We also set up a goal tracker on the donation page to help ARMY who wanted to see live figures. Split Donations allowed us to track a portion of the amount raised by ARMY for the project through a live tally while we are still counting the receipts submitted via fans through our form, who either donated to the organizations individually or separately.
Before Match A Million was initiated, ARMY had already been consistently donating to the organizations supporting BLM. In the first 4.5 days (since June 1), the total number of donations made through the split donations feature tallied approximately $50,000 USD.
Within 24 hours of the launch of #MatchAMillion on 7th June, ARMY raised and even surpassed $1 Million.
