Matching movement is possibly the most basic kind of match cut. It’s exactly what it says. A panning motion in one room cuts or dissolves to panning in another room, suggesting a connection between the rooms. A door closes, another door opens at the same angle and vantage point, suggesting someone moving from place to place, perhaps from an elevator at work to a subway platform heading home.  - Vegas Creative Software.

One of the most innovative part of the TV Series “Sherlock” is the transitions. Which employ the use of movement match cut, a process that connects the audience with Sherlock character experience his mind process.

This is all part of a visual language that brings us into the mind of one of the cleverest characters in all of pop culture as he does what he does best: solves mysteries.

A match cut is a cut between two clips that consistently share one or more qualities of action, composition, content, or subject matter. The adjacent juxtaposition of two clips with shared traits builds a stronger story, whether it is narrative or thematic in nature. A match cut ties those two clips together by placing an edit between the clips at a point in which the shared quality is aligned between the two. A match cut could work like a snap in the face for audiences focusing on a scene or a moment that suddenly takes you out of there. In the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the effect is to take Walter from his daydreaming stage in a scene where he hypothetically rescues Cheryl's dog. You can see the explosion happening behind Walter while we cut to him at the train platform realized that he missed his train.

A great example of a compelling match cut is in the film Synchronic. The film tells the story of two New Orleans paramedics and longtime best friends, Steve and Dennis are called to a series of bizarre and gruesome accidents; they chalk it up to a mysterious new drug found at the scene. They also have the ability to do so with both impact, and subtext. They differ from regular cuts because they provide a thematic connection between two separate events or concepts.

Brazilian film editor Daniel Rezende use this technique masterfully in the film City of God. In this scene, an object passes in front of the camera to reveal another location. In this case, we see two kids and a blue pickup truck that, after passing, the scene's color changes from warm red to colder blue, and the two characters are now teenagers.

Film Editor Chris G. Willingham did this effect, creating a very shocking result in the film Final Destination 3.

The scene occurs at a tanning salon where Ashley and Ashlyn are in a tanning salon. The girls face a horrific accident where they die after being trapped in malfunctioning tanning beds and burning alive.

On of the most successful film of 2020 is the film Becky Spunky and rebellious Becky tries to reconnect with her father during a weekend getaway at a lakefront house. But the trip soon takes a turn for the worse when convicts on the run, led by the merciless Dominick, suddenly invade the home.

With a surprising performance by Kevin James, is an ultra violent film but well edited moments. Editor Alan Canant  Mastered a series of Match cuts that introduce Becky and Dominc characters into this film.

In film, a match cut is a cut from one shot to another where the composition of the two shots are matched by the action or subject and subject matter. For example, in a duel a shot can go from a long shot on both contestants via a cut to a medium closeup shot of one of the duellists.

A match cut is one of the most powerful types of cuts in picture editing. The technique has two shots with literally the same or similar subject, with actors placed at the same position. However, it needs some differences to show a progression of contrast and time.

Editor Gabriel Fleming mastered perfectly in the film Blindspotting The film starts with the actor Daveed Diggs as Collin Hoskins a convicted felon who is facing a judge in court then we cut to a flashback of him and his buddies in a car. The contrast of his face and cinematography helps to make the transition effective.

After a long hiatus, I'm returning with a fresh transition from new movies. My obsession with "Match cut" with one of the most disturbing combinations I have ever seen in a long time.

The film Saint Maud tells the story of A nurse named Katie failing to save the life of a patient in her care, despite attempting CPR. She keeps having nightmares about this indecent. In this scene, she is having intercourse with a guy she met at a bar, during sex, she suffers flashbacks of the death of her patient.

The match cuts are powerful but disturbing at the same time. Editor Mark Towns did an excellent job combining the shots to develop great pacing with a strong effect at the end.
