What's your opinion of tattooes and other body modifications? Is it something catholists care about or is that as random as changing hair colour?
The Catholic opinion is usually that we remember our body is not our own, and that Christ lives within us. Anything that we do in (or on) our bodies leads back to our faith, as our body is a gift from Him (see 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Leviticus 19:28 and 3 Kings 18:28 also have some things to say on this.
Making a permanent mark on your body has implications with your spirituality, and it is generally advised within the Church that we avoid what damages the body being a temple of the Lord. If we appreciate our body as a beautiful gift from God, and see his creation as perfect, then we shouldn't feel a need to permanently modify it. I think that in this case, tattoos are a little more significant than changing hair color.
Edit: I should also make a note about religious/scriptural/faith based tattoos. If you feel that getting a tattoo is something you are convicted to or have prayerfully considered, I do believe it should be something that glorifies God. A cross, meaningful verse or other spiritual image would be more appropriate, let's say, than a picture of a band member or dragon (I clearly don't know what people get tattoos of!). This modification, if meant to bring attention to God and not oneself, may be something that brings His name to light and allows for conversion in others.Â
I hope this makes sense!Â
