“The power of things inheres in the memories they gather up inside them, and also in the vicissitudes of our imagination, and our memory--of this there is no doubt.”
Museum of Material Memory, India
“The Museum is an effort to digitally archive material culture of the Indian subcontinent, tracing family history and social ethnography through heirlooms, collectibles and objects of antiquity”
Through storytelling, each post on the Archive reveals not just a history of objects and the people they belong to, but also unfolds generational narratives about the tradition, culture, customs, conventions, habits, language, society, geography and history of the vast and diverse subcontinent.
“Memories often fall into the abyss of forgetting. But, unknowingly in some cases, transference of such memory does occur into alternative means of collection for instance, into inanimate objects. The object, thus serves as a catalyst for memory, a trigger for remembering as well as a portal into the past.”
Book: Remnants of a Seperation
The author Aanchal Malhotra explores the idea that people often store their memories in objects of the past. The short stories capture the essence of the Partition of India through objects carried across the border. The objects stand testament to a time that now forgotten in history.
My interest in material memory was greatly influence by this book and it further encouraged me to explore this topic further.
•The entire concept of a cultural identity enveloped within a single event, a single line, a single word: PARTITION. •The ingredient of one's past are particular and not exchangeable with another , yet I have wondered time and again whether they are subconsciously transferrable. A wonderful book about stories of partition and pre- partition. How a single piece of object holds so much memories. My weekend is sorted. What about you.? #amreading #remnantsofaseparation #aanchalmalhotra #stories #partition #prepartitionindia #materialmemory
