Clockwise from lower left are: a rotating cube, the graph of the real part of the complex squaring function (a saddle surface), the graph of the real part of the complex logarithm (a helicoid), the cusp of the Gauss mapping of a surface showing five-fold symmetry, and a projection of a hypercube rotating in four-space. This picture was taken in 1979 for the Science 1980 magazine article, but not used.
