---- On this day in 1864, at nine o’clock in the morning, William Henry Johnson was hanged outside the Union trenches encircling Petersburg. A Baltimore native and a private in Company E, 23rd Regiment, United States Colored Troops, Johnson was accused of desertion and, according to a Harper’s Weekly report, of attempting “to commit an outrage on a white woman at Cold Harbor.”* In order to build a gallows, the troops needed to call a short truce with nearby Confederates, and Union officers invited two sets of cameramen—from the competing firms of Alexander Gardner and Mathew Brady—to record the event. #civilwar #mathewbrady #lensculturetalent #abstractphotograph #welltraumziney #fineartphotography #ifyouleave #hurtlamb #surreal42#interiordesign#piękneniebo#skylights #cerfrumos #rundownmagazine#lifeinlogan #loganphotographer #manicplateau #photocinematica https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs4pHQRgiGi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=30tv20nrzyvc
