Kingsman The Golden Circle
4414.The film go off to a bad start, a badly shot and edited fight scene in a taxi. It is difficult to pull off a fight scene in such as small setting such as a taxi. However, this film seems very self aware, this is almost a sarcastic recreation of films such as James Bond. It understands the far fetched technology and situations in these films and almost parodies them in a big budget spy film. So I can understand the fight scene at the start being unrealistic in its situations, however, the visual effects were not the best, they made the two actors look they were made of wax and rubber. This however is not seen much later in the film, the visual effects with the robotic animals and salon girl are a lot more realistic.
Speaking of the robots, this was also something that didn’t sit well with me. I know the whole theme of the film is to push the boundaries between serious spy and parodied plots, but this is something that was too far in my opinion. Especially with the eyes of the dogs, they reminded me of K-9 from Dr. Who and this is something that I don’t want to think about in something that is supposed to be set in the real world.
I’m sure by now you’re thinking that I hated this film, I didn’t, its a film that you can sit back and simply enjoy. It isn’t a smart film, but it is a franchise that could create a new version of an old classic. It is a very self aware film, it understands its far fetched and does nothing to stop it, I like this and I think films like this are hard to pull off. You can always tell with Mathew Vaughn films that there is passion behind it, with films like Kickass (which he funded independently) it seems unlikely that he would be powered by Hollywood, but I believe that the casting of Channing Tatum was unnecessary use of star power to gain an audience. With the first Kingsman making 414.4 million USD in the Box Office it was obvious that people would come back to watch the next one, especially with the same director. Channing Tatum was not my favourite pick for this performance. However, Julianne Moore’s performance was incredible, I feel the vacant look and eerie smile was perfect for a psychopathy like this.
In conclusion I think this film isn’t without its flaws, but no film is, especially with picky media students like me in the world. For the regular audience member it is enjoyable, but I think that it is not likely for it to become a timeless classic.
